I attended a Protestant bible study tonight and the pastor was present. He mentioned that Jesus did not die on Friday, as the Catholic church teaches, but that he died on a Wednesday. He claimed that his research emphatically showed that Christ died on Wednesday because of the plural form of the word “sabbaths” in the biblical text. He also stated that the Catholic church taught that he died on Friday because of tradition. I’d appreciate any help you can give as to why the Church celebrates Christ’s death on Friday. Thank you for your time.

Dear friend,

After over 2000 years of Christian acceptance of Jesus dying on Friday, suddenly this man
knows what no one else in all this time has known? He hardly seems credible. But even if Jesus did die on a Wednesday, Friday is still the day that Christianity commemorates His death. We don’t know the exact day on which Jesus was born; but so what! That we celebrate it each year is what is important.
