Did Jesus go to hell?

This is what is behind the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus. Lazarus was in the “bosom of Abraham” and the Rich Man was in a place of torture, yet there was a divide over which the two could speak to one another. This story took place before Christ’s Resurrection.

Yes, Christ redeemed them on Holy Saturday.

Ephesians 4:8-10 Wherefore he saith: Ascending on high, **he led captivity captive: **he gave gifts to men. 9 Now that he ascended, what is it, but because he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He that descended is the same also that ascended above all the heavens: that he might fill all things.

I understand and absolutely believe all that is said here about Jesus freeing the prisoners. I find that especially beautiful. But, I also thought that since Jesus carried OUR sins on His person to the cross, that having died with them, He descended into Hell where those sins were deposited and not being able to hold Him who was without sin, Hell had no way to hold Him captive. I just thought that.

Sounds just like what St John Chrysostom said:

He destroyed Hades when He descended into it. He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh. Isaiah foretold this when he said, “You, O Hell, have been troubled by encountering Him below.”

Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with. It was in an uproar because it is mocked. It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed. It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated. It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive. Hell took a body, and discovered God. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see.

O death, where is thy sting? O Hades, where is thy victory?

Christ is Risen, and you, O death, are annihilated! Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down! Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is Risen, and life is liberated! Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. - St John Chrysostom, Paschal [Easter] Homily

One of these off-the-charts TV evangelists said that Jesus went to hell and engaged satan in hand-to-hand combat to win human souls. (BULL-ONEY!) To my mind Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross was enough!👍 Then he did go to the dead (those who lived and died before Calvary) and preached the Word to them and led them to heaven. but only that part of the realm of the dead where “good” people were.
 
The bible says he went to hell and preached them the good news and those that believed were saved. It also says some of them were raised from the dead and walked about Jerusalem giving testimony.

Jesus himself said äll power on heaven and earth has been given to me.
 
Dante in Inferno Canto IV has Virgil describe to him the Harrowing of Hell, when they are traveling through the first circle of Hell, reserved for people who had never known Christ, but were still good.

To me the Master good: “Thou dost not ask
What spirits these, which thou beholdest, are?
Now will I have thee know, ere thou go farther,
That they sinned not; and if they merit had,
'Tis not enough, because they had not baptism
Which is the portal of the Faith thou holdest;
And if they were before Christianity,
In the right manner they adored not God;
And among such as these am I myself.
For such defects, and not for other guilt,
Lost are we and are only so far punished,
That without hope we live on in desire.”
Great grief seized on my heart when this I heard,
Because some people of much worthiness
I knew, who in that Limbo were suspended.
“Tell me, my Master, tell me, thou my Lord,”
Began I, with desire of being certain
Of that Faith which o’ercometh every error,
“Came any one by his own merit hence,
Or by another’s, who was blessed thereafter?”

yes i know but it’s misleading for someone to read on here who might not know that.
