Polygamy is not a doctrine…it is a practice…The doctrine is Celestial or Eternal Marriage.
Polygamy is a way in which it was practiced for a time, now monogamy is the practice. The doctrine remains the same.
Hi flyonthewall your post above about the doctrine of Celestial or Eternal Marriage brings me to this I posted earlier… meaning lds DO beleive Jesus married?

[To obtain the celestial glory, which means to obtain godhood, a couple must have a temple marriage referred to as the sealing ceremony or endowments. This marriage is referred to as for all time and eternity and means an eternal marriage. Joseph Fielding Smith gave this answer to the question about Mormon couples who are not married in the temple, "Unless young people who marry outside the temple speedily repent, they cut them-selves off from exaltation in the celestial kingdom of God. If they should prove themselves worthy, notwithstanding that great error, to enter into the celestial kingdom, they go in that kingdom as servants. [see Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, 4 vols. (Salt Lake: Deseret Books, 1957-66), p. 196., Gospel Library, [CD-ROM], Infobases, 1998.’]

***********This means that unless Jesus Christ was married he would not be allowed to go to the highest heaven which is the Celestial Heaven nor could he become a god. It is an absolute fact that the LDS Church’s official teaching is that a man must be married to obtain the Celestial Heaven. ***********************************************************

The unmistakable conclusion is that the LDS god was a mortal man who was married and his marriage qualified him for being exalted to godhood. The god of the Mormons is a man-god who once was a man like any other man, who by his good works was exalted to godhood. That is what the Mormons are working for…not salvation…but godhood. (See Genesis 3:5, Godhood is what Satan promised Eve if she disobeyed God and ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil)

God bless you

Hi Annie, you make a very good point that various religious denominations have unofficial opinions or understandings and you say yourself “{I guess it is like any other teaching from any church that may be in error.}” So you yourself see it as an error? "{ It may have been taught at one time but has become an “opinion”} So you see it ‘was’ taught and believed by the followers of Lds.
Hi TBC -
the error I speak of is when a teching is taught ~as if it were actual church doctrine~ no matter what church it is. I believe that ALL people have the right to believe WHATEVER they want, doctrine or not:thumbsup:

Jesus did not have to “become” a god as he already was a god by his birth as the Son of God which, though being also a man, precludes him from the requirements of us “mere” humans.

It is in your D&C section 132, which makes it doctrine. So, I understood it as polygamy is a doctrine that is no longer practiced.

Joseph Smith could appoint successors.

Joseph Smith could have 30 wives…what else could he have that the modern Mormon church can’t have?

Annie b…not to belabor it, what is the point of teaching it if it was not derived from the core theology or doctrine. There had to be some basis for it, as coming from an authority within the religion or church espousing it. So what you are saying (correct me if I am wrong)…that what the LDS taught, for example about polygamy, was wrong to begin with, yet still espoused by its leaders, and taught to believers?

If sex was given to us by God then why wouldn’t he preform those things. Sex is not bad if its not abused.
If sex was given to us by God and is not a bad thing then why wouldn’t God allow it in paradise!
What I understand that we were like angels prior to the fall and will be again like them later on.
“At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” (Matthew 22:30).
but what about this one, all Adam had to do was say hay wife give me a child and poof there was a child without Eve getting pregnant at all. Just poof the child is there.
Bypassing pregnancy, that is an excellent concept also 👍

yes he did,he’s also coming back for a harem of churches at the second coming not just the one he founded on peter:D:banghead::bigyikes:

And further down in that same article:
Just as the practice of plural marriage among the Latter-day Saints began gradually, the ending of the **practice **after the Manifesto was also gradual.

I am not saying anything of the sort! I am saying that teachings, of ANY church, run the risk of being incorrect if they are not doctrine. Many of the teachings that are not doctrine ARE correct, again, for any church. Doctrine is not the only truth.

It’s not so much that God doesn’t allow sex in Heaven, but that its unneccessary. Why would the dead have to procreate? (crude question I know).

Sorry you are incorrect. THIS Mormon does not believe that Jesus was married and I am still Mormon:D
The claim that you don’t believe that Jesus was married makes you one in how many mormons?
As to incorrectness, IF you really were ever a Catholic, you apparently were never properly catachized.
If you had been, you would not be defending the mormon take on this discussion and would be preparing for Mass this weekend to thank God for taking on flesh and coming among us.
That’s what I’m off to do now.

LemonandLime…

Yes…good question…why would dead bodies need to procreate…???

Annie…

What is doctrine but defining truth or constructs of beliefs…

Hi Annie I agree totally with you that we all have the right to believe whatever we want doctrine or not 👍 We have free will.
That brings me to the point of free will. Why are we allowed to have free will to choose which path to take in life and which choices to make?

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (NASB) Matt. 7:13-14

Hi flyonthewall further to your comment on polygamy what are your thoughts on …below…thankyou!

“In the late 1880s,” says Hinckley, “Congress passed various measures prohibiting [polygamy]. When the Supreme Court declared these laws constitutional, the church indicated its willingness to comply. It could do nothing else in view of its basic teachings on the necessity for obedience to the law of the land. That was in 1890. Since then officers of the church have not performed plural marriages, and members who have entered into such relationships have been excommunicated.”

Before Congress acted, Mormons were convinced polygamy was not merely permissible, but positively good, for those “of the highest character who had proved themselves capable of maintaining more than one family.” (Section 132 of Doctrine and Covenants is officially subtitled this way: “Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded July 12, 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant, as also plurality of wives.”)

Yet this position was dropped when Washington, D.C., threatened to deny statehood to Utah. Similarly, and more recently, a “revelation,” saying blacks would no longer be denied the Mormon priesthood, was given to Mormon leaders when the federal government became involved.

Jesus did not have to “become” a god as he already was a god by his birth as the Son of God which, though being also a man, precludes him from the requirements of us “mere” humans.

Annie
Hi again Annie do you really believe these…

“Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers,” (Mormon Doctrine, by Bruce McConkie, p. 547).

“The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s…” (D&C 130:22).]

Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers and we were all born as siblings in heaven to them both, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163).

May God bless you

I spent two years in the LDS church and really never paid much attention to them teaching that Jesus was married. They don’t publicly teach that God is married but I was talking on the phone with a friend who was trying to get me to stay in and he was telling me about the wives of Heavenly Father.

Now I find their teachings very wrong but they are still in my head. It does break my heart sometimes that they would have such radical believes. I can see why so many ex-LDS become atheists.
May God bless you Tiki and you are in my prayers. This is for you my friend.

St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians 2:1-18

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive of love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every other name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you must be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured as a libation upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you should also be glad and rejoice with me.

This passage you have quoted here has to do with marriage not sex. There is nothing here that say anything about sex.

Sex it pleasurable to humans. There is nothing more pleasurable then being in heaven in the presence of God. You don’t need anything more than that.

I thought you would like that concept. 👍
