Did Jesus really die on Friday

I don’t really pay much heed to solo scriptura wafflings but I did just see a brief clip of a Textbert from the Filippines (ministry of the Church of God or something) say about the time Jesus said the only sign given to the Jews that he is the Messiah is the sign of Jonah.

Jonah spent three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, so The son of man will do the same (Three days and Nights).
Surely Jesus would have to have been Crucified Wednesday in order to spend the full 3 days and nights, if resurrected on Sunday?

This out of context Biblical extract of course does, typically enough, not take into account that the Bible distinctly also mentions the preparations for the festival of Passover which of course would make Christ’s crucifixion possible and likely on Friday. But is there any reconciliation with the sign of Jonah possible? Or should we really be doing our Good Friday on Spy Wednesday ?(just kidding) 🙂

The gentleman suggested if Christ’s crucifixion was Friday there is no resurrection , which is a little extreme if the days of the week matter to your faith in the Resurrection, but it does show that Scripture often does contradict and that is more reason why we need the influence and direction of Holy Mother Church, and our traditions e.t.c imo

I doubt Jonah was eaten at midnight on the first day. Mind you that by Jewish tradition (if I remember this right), the day lasted until sundown. That’s why Jewish feasts begin at sundown and not the day of.

In addition to the sunset-to-sunset Jewish day (instead of our midnight-to-midnight day), there is also the fact that the number zero had not yet been invented. Thus:

First day: From sunset on Thursday to sunset on Friday
Second day: From sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday
Third day: From sunset on Saturday to sunset on Sunday

Jesus died at around 3 p.m. on Friday, i.e. about three hours before the end of the first of those three days. The Resurrection occurred some time before dawn on Sunday morning, say around the tenth hour of the third (Jewish) day. He was dead for a part of the first day, the whole of the second day, and a part of the third day.

And “on the third day He rose again” as we say in the Creed. Which means, at some point after sunset on Saturday and before early morning on Sunday when Mary Magdalene and the other women went to his tomb.

This is how we know Jesus was truly human as well as divine. He knew he had to spend 3 days in the tomb. He figured out how to make that three days as short as possible. 😜

“Three days and three nights” as used by Jesus is a Jewish idiom, it does not necessarily mean literally 72 hours. An example of imposing 21st century understanding on a 1st century text.

Excellent explanation. People have a hard time wrapping their minds around the Jewish reckoning of days. When Christ was crucified on Friday, Friday night had already happened. And that any part of a day would have counted for the entire day in their minds.

As well, there is the “Sacred Pit” (or Holy Pit) beneath what is believed to the be the palace of Caiaphas - where Jesus was held from Thursday evening until his trial on Friday. Many speculate that “the bowels of the earth” might also include His time spent in subterranean captivity awaiting trial.

The Byzantine Tradition follows the Semitic system so our liturgical day begins at Vespers and ends with the Ninth Hour vs the Roman system which goes from midnight to midnight.
