Did Jesus Really Say That?

Jesus is often quoted verbatim in the gospels. Are we to believe that he actually said what he is quoted as saying? If so, how could someone writing an account of Jesus’ life years after Jesus lived actually remember exactly what Jesus said?

IMHO I think the writers of the gospels wrote as they remembered. Some things might have been verbatim and some not. Is is left to the Holy Spirit that the writers wrote the TRUTH as Jesus taught whether verbatim or not.

I’m certainly not an authority on the Bible, but I think that Jesus gave this Holy Spirit to the writers so that all of us know about Him…So Jesus really said all that…I just read John 14:26 and that’s what it says basically.

Different people have different ideas about how many verbatim quotes are in the Gospel.

What’s essential, as the Church teaches, is: “The sacred authors, in writing the four Gospels, selected certain of the many elements which had been handed on, either orally or already in written form; others they synthesized or explained with an eye to the situation of the churches, the while sustaining the form of preaching, but always in such a fashion that they have told us the honest truth about Jesus.” (CCC 126)
