Did Joseph come from the house of David?

I was listening to a Apologist give a speech about Joseph and Mary and he said something that caught my ear. He said that Mary’s father, Joachim, was from the house of David and since Mary was an only child, tradition had it that since Joseph married her, that he would take over that lineage . can you please clarify?

According to the genealogies of Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38 St. Joseph was of the House of David.

I don’t know what the Apologist in question was trying to say. Judaism traditionally applied tribal lineage from the father’s side. Mary’s status as an only child would have played no role.
