Did Joseph Smith ever quote from the Book of Mormon?

Good Day to You!

I don’t have a direct answer to your question, however, I do not believe that the LDS church claims that the Book of Mormon is superior to the Bible, just that it is another testament to the Bible. Having read the Book of Mormon, myself, I find nothing in it that is contrary to the teachings found in the Bible. As a matter of fact, there are footnotes in every Book of Mormon directing the reader to references found in the Bible that quantify the scriptures as they are in the Book of Mormon.

God Bless You!
Hi msvsheppard - The first line in the Introduction from my BoM states “The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible.”

(comparable, of course, means equivalent)

Then paragraph six from the Introduction says: "Concerning this record the Prophet Joseph Smith said: “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”

This obviously means that the BoM is superior to the Bible - it is more correct, is the keystone, and is the means for man to gain the fulness of God’s plan. It is clear that the BoM, not the Bible, is the way to achieve a relationship with God.

Strong work, lax16. Now for the coup de grâce; ask him how the Bible could say almost the exact same thing as the BOM and still be missing many ‘plain and precious things?’ And how could the Bible, being so deeply in error, then, contain the ‘fulness of the gospel?’

I am a 40 something female and had been a very devoted Catholic all my life. Went to Catholic school, attended Sunday and oftentimes weekday masses… Sent my children to Catholic school… I was very much in touch with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

A little over a year ago, I discovered through Ancestory.com that I was directly descended from one of the eight witnesses of the golden plates claimed to be the source of the Book of Mormon. His name is even listed in the front cover of the Book of Mormon. This discovery rocked my world. This came at an extremely low point in my life, since my husband had left me a few years earlier and had just succeeded in convincing the courts to let my twin daughters come to live with him on a “trial” basis. I was left alone and was feeling abandoned by all, including God, though I was still attending Sunday Mass.

Following this discovery, my path led me to one encounter after another with Mormons who had answers for me. Within the last year, I agreed to be baptized just as Jesus had been. He wasn’t baptized as a child, like we are. He was a full grown man just about to start His mission. It only made sense to me that if we were to follow Christ’s example, we should be baptized in much the same manner as He was. The baptism and subsequent confirmation were both extremely Spirit filled events, giving affirmation to the fact that God was present.

I have since found the LDS people to be excellent examples of who Christ would want us to be. They are very humble, loving, and kind. They put a very high value on family and do a splendid job of raising clean, chaste, Christian children. They reached out to me when I was down and the Catholics I knew were too busy with their own lives and fears to care about their fallen sister. I have grown to love the LDS Ward family that I am now a part of, just as though they are family. They have never taught me anything but Christ like virtue straight from the Bible.

Still, I miss Christ’s presence in the Eucharist… GREATLY. I am now completely torn as to what God wants me to do. I still have a very deep and personal relationship with my Savior. I am not sure if it is my mind or the Holy Spirit that is telling me that the Nephites, Lamanites, and now LDS Members are the sheep of a different fold Jesus referred to in John 10:16. The Book of Mormon clearly claims that they are.

To further clarify, I will quote John 10:16 from the Catholic Edition of the Living Bible (paraphrased): “I have other sheep, too, in another fold. I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice; and there will be one flock with one Shepherd.” I could quote the Book of Mormon on its references, but I don’t think that is what this forum wants to hear.

We as Catholics, have never believed that the Bible was the end all of end alls. That is why there are volumes and volumes more of published chronicles of the lives of the Saints and such. The Bible, itself, was not the endeavor of one person sitting down and writing it out, but rather a compilation of many authors’ writings taken down over many thousands of years. This is why I am open to the potential of the Book of Mormon, along with its claims.

However, I feel now like a lost and confused child of God. I have scrambled everything up in my head and fear for my soul, despite my pious lifestyle and Christian heart. I am not out to steal anyone else’s soul. I am just earnestly searching for the truth. I wanted to let you all who have judged me so harshly know who I really am and what I am really going through.

I am certainly open to your opinions and request your prayers for my guidance. I have not seen where Mormons could possibly be anti-Christian until I just realized that by keeping people from the Eucharist, they are removing the actual presence of Christ from their lives, and leaving them unprotected from the adversary. I love the LDS people who are now like family to me and I do not want to leave that family. I am truly torn and in need of prayers.

msvsheppard, I didn’t mean to say you were trying to “steal anyone’s soul”. I meant the LDS who prey on Catholics, and other Christians.

You know, there is value in the journey that we go on. God works in and through our lives, not around and outside.

Mormonism breeds confusion, that I will say. Outside of that, your thoughts on the Eucharist are spot on. And if God is calling you back to His Presence, why not answer? There is nothing to fear.

As to who or what is in your family tree. I’m descended from Mormon pioneers. Their histories are found throughout Mormon publications. I was raised LDS and taught that I should be “true to this heritage”.

Ironic when compared to your journey, I went through my parent’s genealogy, looking at what religion people were before Mormonism came along in 1830. All were Christian, of course, Protestant American at that time in history. Further back, they were all Catholic.

It is not our calling to be true to a heritage. It is our calling to be true disciples of Christ. Pray that God guides you to Him and protects you from what is false. I will pray for you also.

Rebecca

One good things I recently heard, while being interviewed by a woman who runs the RCIA class I was thinking of joining, said that the LDS to go after people who are lost and confused and depressed, like I was when I joined the church. I was greatly depressed when I joined. And I did gain strength in the church. I do own a lot to the church as I’ve started on the road to become a better man. But now I’m trying to stand up for what I believe is true deep in my soul and stop lying to myself - and that means walking away from the LDS church. To the new convert I would ask - you are ok sharing a future husband with other women? Because that’s is exactly what is going to happen if you make it to the Celestial Kingdom. Perhaps you are one of those that must be married to a man to be happy. If so the LDS church is for you. Good luck.

I have never met or known a Mormon believer, I know nothing of their beliefs or spirituality.
would someone who knows, tell me who they consider their leader to be? Is it the author of their Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith?
Peace, Carlan

Jospeh Smith is the founder of Mormonism. Their current leader (their “prophet”) is Thomas S. Monson.

Following this discovery, my path led me to one encounter after another with Mormons who had answers for me. Within the last year, I agreed to be baptized just as Jesus had been.
Having confirmed what I already knew, why do you claim to be a Catholic when you’re a Mormon? Where did the church teach you that lying was appropriate? I would have more respect for your if you simply told it the way it was, rather than being sneaky about it.
I have since found the LDS people to be excellent examples of who Christ would want us to be. They are very humble, loving, and kind. They put a very high value on family and do a splendid job of raising clean, chaste, Christian children.
I agree and I’ve already said exactly that several times, but that’s simply doing the right thing for the wrong reason. In contrast, if you knew your neighbor had all of the same characteristics but was a Muslim, would you think that Islam was correct? And what if your neighbor was a satanist?

1 Thess. 5:21 says that we should prove all things, holding fast to that which is true. When even the Bible tells you not to take its word for it, but to prove it for yourself, who are you going to listen to? Your own desires or the word of God?
They have never taught me anything but Christ like virtue straight from the Bible.
Have they also taught you that the Bible is missing many ‘plain and precious things?’ And that they don’t know which parts are correct?
Still, I miss Christ’s presence in the Eucharist… GREATLY. I am now completely torn as to what God wants me to do. I still have a very deep and personal relationship with my Savior. Unfortunately, this is the first LDS-issued landmine you stepped on. Since there were no Lamanites or Nephites, there would’ve been no reason for Christ to visit the Americas. And Romans 10:19,29 says “…I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.” Since the Nephites were anticipating the messiah, this can’t possibly apply to them, can it? No, it does fit the Gentiles, however, doesn’t it?

There are lots of Biblical references that Mormons use to prop themselves up but each and every one of them can be shown to misinterpreted, taken out of context, or used inappropriately.

You are a Mormon, not a Catholic. You can get on the right track by being honest first with yourself and second with us.
You are lost; you’ve bought into the nonsense gussied up as Christianity. If you want the truth, you won’t find it in Mormonism.

Here’s a little challenge: if you’re able, ask several members of the church why your god, in the BOM, is an eternal spirit but why he has a body of flesh and bone in the D&C. Compare their responses and them contrast them against the BOM and the Bible. Let us know what you find out.

I haven’t judged you; that’s not my job. I just called you out because you thought we don’t know what’s going on. I’ll recommend a few books for you to read but what you do with that information is up to you. You can stay where you feel good or you can follow God, which doesn’t always feel so great. God didn’t promise us that we’d be picking tulips in the land of milk and honey in his service.
I am certainly open to your opinions and request your prayers for my guidance. Yes, I will pray for you and I hope that you see Mormonism for what it is: a deceitful sham that lies to its members. No one here has ever said that Mormons are anti-Christians, but rather that they are not Christians. The use of the name doesn’t mean anything; besides, the church didn’t use the name Christ from 1834 to 1838, but they won’t tell you that. Who was the church of during those years?

You can love Mormons as much as your own flesh and blood but they can be very nice, kind people and still be wrong about God.

Their leader is Joseph Smith. Go to services a few times and you are bound to hear hymns sung to him. He’s almost worshiped in the church. He’s the god of Bunny Rabbits! If you want to join you have to accept Christ but also Joseph Smith. And as Young reportedly said - Smith did more for man than Christ. You believe that?

The actual quote was from John Taylor, and is canonized in D&C 135:
He “has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it” (D&C 135:3).
To be fair, he said save Jesus only, meaning that Joseph has done more than any man except Jesus. So it’s not so bad as you might think, though I still think they are way over the top in their near-adoration of Smith, who was a lying adulterous conman.
