Did Joseph Smith ever quote from the Book of Mormon?

… Beyond that I have nothing further to say to you. …
Then i shall ask you no more questions, unless, of course, you change your mind. I’d like to ask you to consider one thing after i am gone: Did Jesus ever say to anyone, in the Book of Mormon or the Bible, “I have nothing further to say to you”?

… whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
– Jesus (John 6)

Robert, I like to quote from the BOM. It can easily be turned against them. 😃

Me thinks, dear Zer, that i am saddened to find that you have slandered me, and the one i admire, without just cause. For Socrates’ goal i life was never to win arguments but to win (or acquire) wisdom and truth about himself and the God he sought to know.
That does not deserve a reply.
It was Socrates who said:
To be curious about what is not my concern, while I am ignorant of my own self, would be ridiculous.
and
…the unexamined life is not worth living… .
and
…if we had found the truth ourselves, do you think that we would care much about the opinions of men?
and
Wise, I may not call them; for that name is too great and belongs to God alone – “lovers of wisdom,” or philosophers, would be a more harmonious and befitting title.
For the first time, that i recall, you choose to call me your good friend, yet your actions show you to be more an enemy. The devil is the accuser of the brethren, who i wish to be, and you have accused me unjustly. Do you not think this sin grieves the Holy Ghost, as it certainly grieves me?
And it was Jesus who said:

Matthew 7:

7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Luke 11:

9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

D&C 88:

63 Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you; seek me diligently and ye shall find me; ask, and ye shall receive; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Regarding prayer, my friend Zer (for i would like to become your friend), i have been praying each day that the Holy Ghost would reveal the truth to me about the Book of Mormon through my dialog with you. Perhaps by your refusing to answer my questions i have the answer to my prayer?

🤷
I sincerely hope that you are my friend, and that I am a friend to you. However, with regard to prayer, and knowing the truth of the Book of Mormon, God never promised to anybody that the truth of the Book of Mormon will be revealed to them by dialoging with me! The promise was that if you would read the Book of Mormon itself, and pray about it in sincerety and in faith, God will reveal the truth of it directly to you.
Then i shall ask you no more questions, unless, of course, you change your mind.
After you have read the Book of Mormon, or any portion of it, and have any questions that you would like to ask me about that, I would be happy to answer. I thought that was our original bargain. If, however, you are expecting me to take the place of the Holy Ghost in revealing the truth of the Book of Mormon to you, that unfortunately I am not in a position to be able to do.

Well, I suppose He did. I can think of some examples. Of the pharisees who were not interested in the truth he said to His disciples:

Matthew 15:

14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

That amounts to saying the same thing.

And yet you’ve admitted that **you yourself **didn’t pray to God about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, because you didn’t need to. Do you remember that conversation?

I would divide mormons between those who received a witness and those who didn’t. I think that Zerinus did receive a witness. When one receives a witness it is very difficult to just leave the lds church. And if one does, one must try to find ways to rationalize it away.

Now if I never received a witness, I would have no problems in leaving. However, I would not be attacking the lds church and perhaps I would defend it on moral grounds. The lds church does wonders with youth and young adults. They are raised to be modest, saintly, and faithful.

Jerusha;

LOL! It is a great tool to dismantle individual revelation and hoity-toity-ness of the ‘Holier Than Thou’ crowd!

Yes, I do. But you have misunderstood what I had said. I knew that the Book of Mormon is true after reading it, or I should say, while I was in the process of reading it. It didn’t happen to me without making that effort. But I didn’t have to physically pray for that knowledge because deep down in my heart I had a great desire to know the truth, and that is the same thing as a prayer. There is a well known hymn that begins with these lines:

Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire,
unuttered or expressed,
the motion of a hidden fire
that trembles in the breast.

That is true. I am convinced that anyone who reads the Book of Mormon with a sincere desire in his heart to know its truth, with a modicum of faith in God, that truth of it will be revealed to him by the Holy Ghost without him having to physically pray for it. In most cases, however, a certain amount of effort in that regard is required, perhaps because the person’t faith is weak, or maybe he needs to demonstrate the sincerety of his desires to himself as well as to God.

I never received a witness of any kind that the Book of Mormon was true and believe me I wanted to. However I honestly believe God heard and answered my prayers. I just needed to listen to the answer he was giving me.

You say you received a witness and yet you were not particularly faithful. Zerinus says he received a witness and yet he didn’t even need to put the prayer up front. It makes no sense to me why God would withhold a witness of something like that from someone who sincerely desires it. Now I see the whole thing from a different view, and I am at peace with God about it.

I agree with you that LDS are taught to be modest saintly and faithful. I can defend the character of many LDS people I know. But I can’t defend the unique doctrines of Mormonism because I sincerely believe them to be false.

Every stink that fights the ventilator thinks its Don Quixote.

Or so said some French wag.

Still, it is worth noting that whenever a zealot is cornered on WHY he believes such-and-such unreal and off the wall ‘beliefs’, he always falls to the unproveable and groundless excuse of a PERSONAL, SUBJECTIVE, REVELATION from some SPIRIT.

Forget the “official teachings,” ignore that man and don’t look behind the curtain!

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear… .

If Jesus gives to all who ask him, will not a genuine follower of Him do the same?

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.*(John 14:12)*And ye are witnesses of these things.

(Luke 24:48)

Do you really believe, Zer, that it is God’s will for you to refuse to give answers to those who sincerely ask? Is this what Jesus did? Is it what He would have you do? Or would He rather have you prayerfully work together with the Holy Ghost, with you giving rational reasons to believe and Him giving a conviction that your answers ring true?

Zer:

It appears you were holding out on me! for i asked you much earlier to describe this conviction you have from the Holy Ghost, yet you would not, saying it could not be described. Yet there is a description in this hymn of “the motion of a hidden fire that trembles in the breast.”

If you are good enough to not completely brush me aside, will you tell me if this sensation of a “fire that trembles in the breast” is the experience of which you spoke? Is this the proof that convicts one that the Book of Mormon is true?

I don’t think that it is the will of God that we should answer every conceivable question that might be asked, no mater how ilogical, unreasonable, irelevant, or inappropriate it might be. Those passages of scripture that you had cited do not mean that. I decide what question is right for me to answer what isn’t. I think that the method of questioning that you were persuing had reached a dead end, and was no longer cnstructive for either of us to pursue.

I think that you had misunderstood the verses of the hymn. The lines:

the motion of a hidden fire
that trembles in the breast

Refers to the prayer, not to the answers to prayer.

or rather those who"believe" they received a witness and those who have not. you could also add the category those who thought they had received a witness and later learned the truth. some of those leave mormonism some stay a “cultural mormon”. regardless of what good things the LDs church does if you believe that the Catholic church is the one that God established and still entrusts with his gospel today then you must view those who attempt to take people out of it with false doctrines and false prophets as deceivers. you can’t have it both ways. Jesus was very clear on this. both catholic and mormon doctrine are as well. if you wait until death to discover the truth hoping to hedge your bet you risk christ saying “i never knew you”. see rev 3:14-22 and Mat 7:21

Yep. You can not base a faith purely on emotions. You have to use objective fact as well. I’m sure Vladimir Lenin felt “good” after reading the Communist Manifesto and felt he had “witnessed” something great. However we know that just because communism sounds good doesn’t mean it works. This is the same with faith.
