LOL!
As for me i cannot see why anyone would like the taste of brussel sprouts! I’ve tried to learn the secret of that desire, but no matter how i cook them and no matter what spices with which i shower them, they still make me turn up my nose. The same goes for liver and turnips. My mother adores the former and my father craves the latter, but i cannot stand either.
When i ask a person to explain how she could put such nasty stuff in her mouth, she says, “Because i like the way it tastes!” When i ask why on earth she thinks it tastes good, she says, “Because it is delicious!” I find that she really has not answered my question, for i ask her
why she believes, and she only answers
what she believes. That is, she believes that brussel sprouts, or liver, or turnips are tasty without giving any good reason why.
I find something similar in my conversations with you, Zer, about belief. I ask why you believe the Book of Mormon is true, and you say it is because the Holy Spirit gives you a conviction that it is. When i ask why you believe the Holy Spirit gave you this conviction, you say it is because the Holy Spirit convicts you that the conviction is from Him, and that is all you have to say about that. Like the lover of liver, or brussel sprouts, or turnips, you have not answered my question.
Please let me explain: Conviction, you agree, is belief. It’s the strongest kind of belief. So, when i ask you why you believe, you answer it is because you believe. I might ask you why you have a conviction, and your answer would be because you have a conviction. You really have not told me why you believe; you’ve only repeated what you believe. You have failed to answer the question.
Hence, i’m left wondering: Do you really know why you believe? Or are you like the one who has a conviction that she loves some nasty food, but, in reality, does not know why? I’m asking for my own benefit, not for yours, for i believe you might be asking me to also believe without knowing why. I’m not sure that would be a wise thing for me to do, but perhaps you can convince me that it is?
