For God to have forced Mary to bear his Son brings to mind blasphemous implications that should not even be brought to mind in the first place, much less seriously entertained. God has given us all free will, and thus the freedom to say no to him, because he wants our response to be one of love. Where there is no freedom, there can be no love. And, where there is no free choice, there can also be no merit for either us or for God. That is why I particularly like J. K. Rowling’s observation that, “It is our choices … that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
