The fact that the Virgin Mary was born free from original sin is an article of the
Catholic faith. This is celebrated on December 8 every year by the Feast of the Immaculate Conception,
one of the most important Catholic feasts. By a unique gift of God and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ to come, the Virgin Mary was free from original sin from the first moment of her conception, as
Pope Pius IX explained it.

Original sin is not a form of personal sin. It mean that spiritual gifts the first man had from God were lost to the human race by a mortal sin on his part sin–in particular, he lost sanctifying grace and freedom from the tendency to sin, from which all men suffer now.
