Hey there DM! All those laws concerning contact with corpses! I wonder what Protestants think of the pieta?

One of our Lady’s sorrows is the removal of Christ from the Cross.

Gail
😃

Hey gailmac! I love this comment.
As to your other question concerning circumcision – I am pretty certain that this was NOT restricted to the temple.
Women gave birth where-ever, and many would still be in Egypt at this time – But circumcision which was introduced before the Ark or the Temple were introduced had to be performed by the eighth day in God’s covenant – eg: Circumcision came before Moses’ time all the way back to Abraham – Circumcisions had a ritual of its own.

I expect, that since the priests were the local butchers in every city – eg:Cohen I think even today is a surname of those descended from the tribe of Levi, and often one will find the family business of people so surnamed to be the local butcher – that Levitical priests may have been called to perform circumcisions as they would be better at it than an untrained father or mother – but I don’t recall anywhere in the Law where this was mandated or changed to be exclusively a priestly (eg:Levitical version) activity.

So, yes, the rosary is meditating on possibly two different events when the presentation is discussed ( the only other temple mystery, eg: the finding of the child, Jesus, in the temple – happened when Jesus was much older. )

The presentation in the temple is the one that is tied to this thread’s question – eg: during the presentation the parents were to offer a sacrifice to ransom the first child back from the womb. At this same sacrifice, the mother could have been present at have been giving the sacrifice mentioned in Leviticus 12 – though the temple was segregated in purity among different rooms or enclosed “porches” – so exactly where this would have happened in the temple, I am uncertain – eg: the person offering a sacrifice of any kind , I would think, would need to have a certain purity to even be allowed in the temple. eg: The Gentiles who came to worship would have been restricted to the outermost porch, and there were death threats written in Greek for any Gentile who dared to enter the porches beyond that.

👍

Hey there Huiou! Thanks for the kudos. You’re some scholar. I’m only working on it. I’ll share - I love meditating on the facts of BOTH events in the Mystery contained in the Rosary. Think about it - the Redeemer of mankind being redeemed Himself in the Temple and (I hope my Protestant brothers and sisters in Christ can stand my sentiments on this) Purity herself asking to receive purification at the Temple as well! Oi what joys we find in the Rosary! The poor man’s Bible! I love it. It still stuns me to think about it. But I don’t expect Protestants to understand it let alone accept it. I long for them to taste what we taste when we give ourselves over to these Mysteries. If they only knew what joys God has in store for them when they come to believe…you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink! Keep up the good work here at CAF and please pray for me.

Peace,

Gail

Hi,

I do think that Lev 12 is the probable verse in reference, and since I don’t know a better one that could be referred to by when Luke writes about what is written in the law, I take it as the part he must mean… although I understand your point about a lack of 100 % certainty.
I am sorry if my befuddlement this last week has made my posts full of run on sentences as difficult to understand as St. Paul who did the same thing when under house arrest.
At least, unlike St. Paul, both sides of this conversation are visible – and not just one side – his side. 🙂

Let us restrict our attention to Leviticus 12 for a moment as the “probable” passage in deference to your preference – and to the psalm on original sin.

I will address the scripture in subsequent posts, and the passages that you bring up – and in doing so-- I will hopefully clear up a few points in my writing that have been overlooked / stated poorly / ambiguously.

BTW: my wife is starting to do better, thanks for the prayers.

I had to laugh when I saw the Oregonian news today – she actually made the big newspaper! – Her accident triggered an emergency meeting of ODOT and the rules (law) for the whole state is changed on account of her !!! 😃 Now all trucks with extended (pole) loads must have a follower vehicle when leaving Oregon state Highway roads.

I know from bitter experience that crossing her can result in a tounge lashing – but she moved the WHOLE STATE !!! 😃 It must have been God – sort of like God “trying” to kill Moses for his son not being circumcised – Here my wife comes home from dropping my brightest son off at a seventh day adventist church for school – and God “tries” to kill her !!!

I think there is a golfing joke with lightning and God in it where the “holy” man gets struck – and the punch line goes in rumbling thunder “D**N missed again!”

Dear Huiou, please know you and your wife have been in my prayers. I just failed ot mention it. Sorry.

Peace,

Gail

12:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean

The period of being unclean for Boys is 7 days. (they are apparently less sin inflicting than girls due to the lack of oestregen or something…maid children its 14 days).

Mary was, as others have commented, obaying Gods law. the law said she was sinful for the act of giving birth and after a week killing a couple of birdies would make her all sinless again. The evil of giving birth had jumped into the birds and their death made her clean.

It’s almost as if she had forgotten that the angels floated down and told her of the nature of the child nine months before.
thats pretty bad memory loss. Most people would recall that happening to them.

She obviously considered herself unclean, unless she was agnostic and simply diddnt want to rock the boat in an age where not slaughtering tweeties would result in a stoning to death.

(Continuation)

In his “History of the Christian Church”, the church historian Neander accounts for the early introduction of infant baptism as follows:
… the theory was finally evolved of the unconditional necessity of INFANT BAPTISM. About the middle of the third century this theory was generally admitted in the North AFRICAN Church … but while in theory the necessity of infant baptism was admitted, still in practice it was very far from being generally prevailing." (Vol. 1, pp. 313-14 – Torrey’s Translation).

Notice that infant baptism was first introduced only in the middle of the 3rd century and only in the North African church. Christ and the apostles never baptized infants, nor did the early Christian church. …
:D, there may be no recorded positive explicit infant command which is clear to the many contradictory 20th century scholars – but there are two problems and a large number of idiot-savant scholars that makes me wonder about your choice of sources!

St. Augustine attacked his opponents on the VERY basis that infant baptism was “universal” practice. But if the practice was “only” in north Africa – and the churches were all independent – Then the enemies had a perfect argument – and the whole church was stupid instead of just part of it.

All they had to say when Augustine shot off his supposed “ignorant mouth” was that they DIDN’T baptize infants – but no such letters exist that I have ever been able to find. I have found arguing historical records which try to “spin” the reason for infant baptism – along the present day pelagain lines. BUT:

The fact is that even in North Africa many avoided the practice of infant baptism – The REASONING, however, was telltale of the truth of Augustine’s position. People assumed the children WOULD sin and so, they reasoned, since baptism is a (tounge and cheek) “get out of Hell free pass” – they chose to postpone the baptism until after the sins happened so as to avoid penance, purgatory, or any of those things the Church still threatens with!

They were pre-planning their children’s SIN LIFE – and totally missing the value of infant baptism as a sign. Augustine’s Pagan father could have used that same common reasoning against Augustine’s Christian mother to pre-plan HIS sin life (which happened) almost as a self fulfilling prophecy.

But, also:Consider baptism is said in the bible to “replace” the act of circumcision as the entry to the covenant. (Skip women.)
The old Circumcision is for infants 8 days old who gain no benefit from the sign at 8 days.

Now if God tried to “Kill” Moses for not circumcising his child – who was not old enough to judge right and wrong – I would need to know what is special about circumcision as an “internal” sign that God should think that the mere image of the useless sign was important enough to level a Death Threat against Moses?

God threatened to kill the PARENT for not circumcising their child. It is the PARENT’S diobedience that is foreshadowed. The innocence of the child is actually irrelevant to the need for child baptism – strangely, it saves parents to circumcize their child. Why not baptism?

Circumcision didn’t even gain heaven – it was access rights to the promised land ON EARTH. eg: Jerusalem and all of ancient Israel was the PROMISE TO ABRAHAM. The terms of the contract with Abraham was to CUT THE SKIN OFF ALL HIS CHILDREN and GRANDCHILDREN to enter the dirty promised land which had evil in it still – not even to enter heaven where evil has been weeded out.

eg: if a child could be excluded from an extra physical “GIFT” given to Israel in the OT covenant for a mere outward sign – what is to stop this from happening in the new covenant which is of much higher value?

And if the scriptures say a son will not die for the fault of the father, it ALSO says elsewhere that the son will be punished for the father’s sin down to the third and fourth generation –
So, in the accounts given of sin and original sin, both explanations must be TRUE IN SOME WAY – but they may be true in different ways.

Abraham makes an excellent example, but one has to see St.Paul’s line of reasoning before that is of value.

Perhaps on another thread when I get over being ill with whatever it is I caught at the Hospital when helping my wife who has health insurance (unlike me) I can tackle the many fascinating scriptural lessons that Abraham provides.
Thanks to everyone for the prayers, we sure need them – I’ve been chewed on by about everything that bites! And I hate to think that God might be “trying” to kill me on account of what my wife has gotten us into out of desperation!
I will feel much better in a day or two when it passes!

HMMM … while I am deleriously awaiting sleep that still isn’t here – and the flu/ringing/fever/ is off I can’t help but wonder about a sort of “Cack Jhick” (copyright ME! NOW) sort of idea about a pamphlet I might make – but I’ll have to simplify it, and add purgatory somehow, along with … oh I don’t know a parody of other so called false truths!

Did Moses argue with Sophira about the “value” of circumcision as they went towards the earthy promised land? Something aramaic/hebrew/Egyptian translated I imagine like:

M:“Hey sophira – no cut – no dirt to feed sheep on.”

S:“Oh Moses, the promised land is MONTHS away. Besides, maybe the kid dosen’t want to have his skin cut – let’s wait until we can ask him for it to be HIS decision.”

M:“Ask him!? you have no idea! Is this live or Memorstone?”

S:“Moses, in my tribe – like the Egyptians – we cut later if at all.”

M:“Aw, Sophiraaaaa, God said that Abraham had to cut ALL his kids skin off on the 8th day in order for us to get the dirt were going to farm! it’s just the contract my wild honey! Why risk a bad interpretation and let God off the hook?”

S:“Yeah, Moses, and Hagar’s children are circumcised too – what’s your point? Let’s go to Egypt right NOW??? How about you just Mosey over there, and settle back in – huh?”

M:“Uh Sophira, don’t you want your son to come visit you? at our tent on real silt?”

S:“Were not there yet Moses – and besides MY family has a different tradition. You mind grabbing that new speckled sheep – I think I want to pawn it off on someone before the spot gets big.”

M:“But, Sophira – you know the terms of the agreement, you’ve heard it – and you said you would comply with Abraham’s version when we discussed this before marriage. I know you want your brother to be there and all, but your brother is a bit of a pervert and I don’t want him setting an example for the kid when he is older. – But – your dad can come!”

S:“Moses! Don’t you dare say that! Just because he has married seven wives and kept the dowries – he’s learned – he’s better now. He doesn’t hit anymore. He ONLY talks about the kids he fathered out of the last one, and how he is going to raise him since she left him to be a temple Goddess.”

M:“Yeah, and that’s why the last time he came over he discussed the inflection angle of hitting to make the best crunches. There is something WRONG with him – and you seem to think it is OK to have that unpredictable brother around MY SON when he is older!?”

S:"YOU JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND! WHY ARE YOU THE ONLY ONE TO MAKE DECISIONS AROUND HERE! I am your wife, your own flesh and bone – why cant you ever accept that MY IDEAS ARE GOOD TOO – I told you once, I told you a million times – we don’t cut the skin until later. If you so much as wave a flint I’ll take the kid and leave you — you’re not REALLY my husband. SOB. CHOKE. I know the desert, I have lived here all my life – I can live here without you.

Besides I can go to AAron and my daddy – and call the Egyptian authorities on YOU! Tell 'em you sinned and raped me at the well instead of the Egyptian – but I I I was afraiiiid."

M:“Whaaaa…? I Give up! God judge you!”

S:“Oh, yeah, Moses! Because YOU have ALREADY judged ME? You HATE me don’t you?!”

M:“uh, no…”

S:“Well Moses – You’re supposed to LOVE your family and do no more damage to my brother than he has done to you.
He hasn’t hit YOU yet, has he? That’s PROOF he can be let back in the family! He’s prodigal, a real wonder of improvement”

M:"Oh God, Hear my prayer, I’m not going to argue – You can save me from the Egyptians – but my WIFE – it doesn’t work with her – and I will just loose my son if I try any harder. She does know – I HAVE TOLD her – It isn’t me! I didn’t do like Adam did! Why can’t she seem to figure it out?

Even if it is “just a sign” – it’s what my family agreed to.
Why is she making me break my oath to you!!! why!!!"

GOD “SEEMS” TO RUMBLE: “D**N missed again!”

😃

No argument from me – I suppose it might equally have gone the other way with Moses being lazy about circumcision.
But then, he doesn’t seem religiously lazy …

Sigh OTOH, Moses is the one who gets punished for not having a strong faith… and since God punishes both men and women alike (see: Miriam) – I suppose in reality Sophira has the testimony in her favor by the lack of her punishment being recorded… 😊

I suppose that it Just goes to show, writing under the influence of NyQuil and Tylenol is probably not a good thing. Mods’ can delete it if they think it too outlandish…

🤷

Hi,
I don’t think that the purification and the atonement are necessarily the same thing, which is why the purification can be for more than one person in Luke whereas the atonement mentioned in Lev 12 is for the woman’s sin offering. …
D.M. I really appreciate your observations – and so long as we are trying our personal hypothesis, I want to make sure to say to other readers that I am not representing the church officially, but am merely interpreting along lines which respect the guidance of Dogma – and carefully study possible clues (as time permits) the historical texts for clarification of minor points.

I get the feeling D.M. that you have the ability to test my limits – and I enjoy that when done gently! (it doesn’t stifle the love of Jesus the Christ in scripture).

KJV: (arrows/emphasis, are mine).
Levit 12:6 And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled,
for a son, or for a daughter,
she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering
and a young pigeon, → or ← a turtledove, for a → sin offering<–, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:
LXX:
Levit 12:6
Since this (mid)passage quote has the most similarity as compared to Luke – using the exact same word stems – this is the process Luke would be referencing. My memory played a trick though, I remembered this passage as being far closer to Luke than it actually is in Greek. Most word stems are the same, (same words), but with different inflections – so that Luke is paraphrasing this passage (duh? right?).

I am still not in a health/frame of mind to put much effort into study right now, so shallowly (but carefully) speaking:

The law introduces the subject of the “sin offering” based on the catharsis of a woman – eg: That of the (singular) woman who gave birth to a child, and is still bleeding. Eg: The reason a normal woman couldn’t enter the temple, but had to give the sacrifice to the priest at the outside door of the tent / tabernacle (eg: the law came while they were in tents, and the tabernacle itself is a tent – then the temple was built.)

The outside door (of the specified meeting porch) on the temple would be, perhaps, equivalent?

Note:
My earlier comments still apply, regarding the piety of many Catholics who do not believe that Mary was subject to a normal birth. eg: The closest I can come to grasping the reasoning behind the belief – in one sentence is:
Psalm 22:9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
Although one may also take this as applying to the average person in a normal birth as well – by assuming the “taking” was not literally/or only partially fulfilled in their case.

Christ uses this psalm specifically on the cross after which (by vague correlation) two witnesses pour fourth from his side – blood and water.

In the Leviticus text, the KJV matches the Greek sentence fairly well, and the conjunctions carry the same issues.
The sentence could be grouped two ways – by the fact that the (young) lamb is matched with a new (young) bird.

–Or by the fact that birds are of the same kind of animal–

In the one case, eg: the lamb AND bird constitute the ransom and a different type of bird is for sins – The sin offering comes as a separate entity from the ransom, and therefore a different reason – but this suggests that one does not offer the RANSOM and a sin offering. But rather, a RANSOM OR a sin offering.

–In the second grouping method one may offer a lamb for the redemption of the child and a bird of one kind or another for a sin offering.

so, Yes, the ambiguity is this part:
1(νεο-σσ-ον) 2(περι-στε-ρ-ας) 3(η) 4(τρυγον-α) 5(περι) 6(`αμαρτ-ι-ας)

(lamb of first year for holocost)
1-new
2-of bird type#1
3-OR
4-bird type#2
5-about/concerning
6-missing the mark (sin).

So, noting that punctuation (like commas in the KJV) are the translators decision, – I ought to make a choice disregarding the commas in the KJV. I could argue that the holocost marks the birds off as separate from the lamb as the type of offering (sin or not) – but then I know a little bit more from other places.

My previous studies of Cain and Abel (here on CAF somewhere…) turned up the surprising possible reading that Cain is told by God that his sacrifice is not “cut right”, and therein lies his sin – his method of sacrificing was wrong.

In another place in the LXX I came across a similar piece of information, where the priests were instructed NOT to “cut up” birds in the same fashion as the lamb – eg: the sacrifice had to be of a different form.

So I would expect that from the KJV or the LXX one can propose that the sin offering is one of two sacrificial options.

eg:
Perhaps this has to do with the case where the child is stillborn? or dies immediately after birth? I never looked at that part very closely. I’ll have to think a bit, and compare it to Luke – etc. – and do some more primary research.

But this would bring into question Mary being a “virtual” lamb with the sword piercing as a facet of the presentation – for, Mary was not a lamb of the first year – nor is she a “new” bird. So the type of bird becomes important in determining what kind of sacrifice is offered in Luke. Hmmm…

New Jerusalem bible 2nd edition, 1968 – grandfathered in the old copyright law, free for all to use.
(From the Hebrew, French, and Greek – using the received text (Hebrew?) as the arbiter. )
Leviticus 5:1 If anyone sins in any of these following cases: …
Leviticus 5:2 or else he touches something unclean, whatever it may be – the dead body of an unclean animal wild or tame
Leviticus 5:3 or else he touches some human uncleanness whatever it may be, and contact with it makes him unclean; he does not notice it, then, realizing it later, he becomes answerable for it;
Leviticus 5:6 if he is answerable in any of those cases, … he must bring to Yahweh as a sacrifice of reparation for the sin committed a female of the flock (sheep or Goat) as a sacrifice for sin; and the priest shall perform the rite of atonement over him to free him from his sin.
Leviticus 5:7 if he cannot afford an animal of the flock, he is to bring to Yahweh, as a sacrifice of reparation for the sin he has **committed *two turtledoves or two young pidgeons ***-- one as a sacrifice for sin, and the other as a Holocost Offering.
Note, that the Gospel records the female lamb in connection with their “purification”… These Laws in the books of Moses were all written looking forward to the holy nativity of the Child – they were to TEACH the Israelites about the sanctity of the MESSIAH’s BLOOD. Joseph, notice, disappears early on in Jesus life – and is never spoken of again.

Did he or did Mary sin in the birth, or did Joseph “sin” without knowing it? How can one tell?

Upon arriving at the temple, at the words of Simeon he slowly realizes what has happened and how God provided for his accident, done in good faith, to help the child Jesus.
Whether it be an unclean insect, dead unclean animal in the manger, or the umbilical cord of Jesus which carries the LORD’S blood — we may never know. God hid the specifics from all – but the prophet Simeon reveals what was hidden, and like the ram for Abraham, God had already provided a female sheep (adult) for St. Joseph who believed. God had a continuing plan for Mary even after the cross.

God bless you too.

The law called for two animals to be sacrificed. In this case, two birds. Mary was humble, so she obeyed this law since it was God’s law. If Mary had been puffed up about her status, God couldn’t have used her. Because she would then be sinful. Did I do better that time? 🤷
Pride is a sin, good answer to what seemed like a trick question.👍

i think this is silly its like “Did Jesus know he was divine?”
I personally think Our Blessed Mother did know…and out of obedience and humilty to the Law did what was commanded. and i don’t think the sin offerring was because Saint Joseph was with her…ok he was not sinless but still we must think what made him a righteous saint? his close relationship with the Christ child and his blessed mother.
He is a righteous saint – the accidental sin, out of ignorance, is equivalent to painting a picture of what Original Sin is – the absence of sanctifying grace – the Gift which bridges the gap between a “missing” thing being an evil – to a missing thing being what God supplies – for God is the All in Everything.

St. Joseph is the Holy Guardian of the Blessed Mother.
He was not given the grace (gift) that Mary had – that is,
he was left in original sin – while she was made graceful.
In this way, the law could be obeyed, Mary’s dignity preserved against the fools who say that “none is righteous – not ONE” Joseph bears a “sin” without guilt.
How else could a “just” man even THINK of divorcing his innocent wife?

God supplied to Joseph by the Angel, what Mary received both by angels and an internal grace (gift) of some kind which prevented her ignorance from causing a true evil – at any point in her life.

Be of Good Cheer, St. Joseph bears original Sin as a trick to beat the devil out of his prey. Mary escaped, and no one can convict her of sin.

Hallel YAHWEH – `Alleluia – Amen

Dear Huiou, please know you and your wife have been in my prayers. I just failed ot mention it. Sorry.

Peace,

Gail
Dear Gail,

I courteously thank you for your prayers. I also want to say, with respect to scholarship – I only partially know what I am doing – if it were not for the enlightening presence, I wouldn’t be able to use anything I know to good effect –
though sometimes his answering forgotten prayers is the most powerful proof of all.

We are all beginners in God’s eyes, if we start at all.

I wish to be silent for a few days, lest I blurt too much out in my excitement, and turn the work of God, through me, into a difficulty for him – I don’t think one can listen when they are full of noise. Good night, and God bless you especially this day – ask the virgin mother for a petition of Joy to aid you in your belief – and do not fear. God is with you today, and should tomorrow be even more difficult – he will still be with you.

–Andrew.

Where indeed are we? With all the injustice, wars, killing, famine, sickness and disease, etc., that we see everywhere around us today, could we honestly say Christ is ruling in His kingdom now? He tells us in His Word that when He rules in His kingdom He shall rule “with a rod of iron.” And this is what God promised: “Behold, the days come, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth” (Jer. 23:5). Is there justice on the earth today? I do not deny God’s Kingdom. I do not deny Christ has conquered. What I am saying is that He has not ruled in His Kingdom yet. That is why Jesus asked us to pray to the Father for His kingdom to come – “Thy Kingdom come” – precisely because it has not come yet.
.
Read the Cathechism! It is tempting to think that Jesus will one day come to fix all the problems here, but the truth is he already has. Does evil still exist… Yes, but good has a greater power and that is the love of Jesus that already is alive. Just by invoking the name Jesus, demons flee and souls are saved. Jesus said that he told us the truth when he said the kingdom of heaven is almost at hand. This is why we are not supposed to be attached to things of this world, because they will lead us down the wrong road. Jesus said his kingdom was not earthly kingdom and that it exists inside of us if we believe. My advise to those who are waiting for G-d to fix all their problems along with the worlds, is that he already has we just have to believe. Suffering will continue to exist until the end of time, but it is necessary for us to be purified along with others.

Hey there DM! All those laws concerning contact with corpses! I wonder what Protestants think of the pieta?

One of our Lady’s sorrows is the removal of Christ from the Cross. Is the sorrow in knowing she was ritually unclean and the sun was going down! Or was it already down? Yet there she was, beneath the Cross with Jesus being lowered into her waiting arms? And no place for Him to rest His head accept her bosom. In light of the laws, how could this be? More of the scandal of the Cross!

And how silly we must look to some thinking she is sinless! I imagine just suggesting she held the dead Body of her Son and pointing to the pages of Numbers could give some Protestants many a good speculation!

Peace,

Gail
Hi Gail!

Now that’s an interesting thought if I ever heard one.

The law I recited had to do with the nazirites being in the vicinity of a dead corpse, and Mary was not a nazirite.

If a nazirite had taken Him down from the cross, I think that man would be committing a sin. But Mary was not under such rule.

We do look very silly to many in thinking she was sinless… I’ve even heard there are people out there who think we worship her. Some people even think that the transubstantiated host is idolatry…

St Paul did say that the cross was foolishness to the world also.

God Bless,

Hi,

Didn’t Jesus say this… whatever two or more of you agree on on this earth in My name, that is shall be done for you by my Father in heaven?

We both agreed that mountain roads were dangerous out west and should be fixed, and I prayed… and… here we go…

Good that your wife is doing better.

May the Lord continue to look after her, you and everyone who cares for her. Amen

I also feel like I have the ability to test people’s limits at times… sometimes I feel like I go too far, but I do my best to do it with kindness, if I should go astray though than may the Lord bring me to repent of it. Amen

I’m not sure if I have completely understood what you mean… I don’t say this in disagreement with it, but rather your superior scholarly knowledge that the Lord has gifted you has left me in a position whereby I am unsure of your exact meaning…

Do you mean that the sin offering, is not necessarily for what we would understand to be a sin (but could be for an accident or simply a matter on sinless uncleanness)?

It seems to state, at least in my bible, that these offerings were made when a person violated the commandments.

Ex:

Leviticus 4:1-3 And the Lord said to Moses, "Say to the people of Israel, If any one sins unwittingly in any of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, and does any one of them, if it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then let him offer for his sin which he has committed a young bull without blemish to the Lord for a sin offering.

I don’t know enough Greek to be able to translate it from the original (or rather the greek translation of the original)…and I assumed that the words ‘sin offering’ referred to a specific object implied… do you mean that the sin offering for violating the commandments here, and the sin offering in other places were a different thing?

when Luke refers to their purification, I’ve come to think that he must be referring to both Mary and Jesus because:

Luke 1:27 And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the customs of the law,

I don’t know what custom they are referring to specifically except what Luke mentions about every male being consecrated, and he had already recorded Jesus’ circumcision in the narrative… maybe this is a clue we’re missing…

In Lev 12 it says

Leviticus 12:6 "And when the days of her purifying are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the door of the tent of meeting a lamb a year old for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering

Therefore it seems to say there are two offerings, one as a holocaust and the other for sin.

I think there may also be a clue:

Leviticus 12:8 And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering; and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean."

Is there anything we may think here about Moses writing about both atonement and cleansing?

That is to say, is it the same thing that a person is atoned and that they are purified?

Could it be two different things corresponding to the two different offerings that were both required at the same time after the pregnancy?

I’ve been thinking about Lev 5 as well and what you wrote about St Paul or some such professional who would have handled dead animals on purpose for their trade…seemingly suggesting in one view that St Paul or another professional would have been forced to break this regulation whenever he did his trade… but, in my bible it says the carcass of ‘an unclean beast’ or the carcass of an ‘unclean swarming thing’… does this refer to all corpses universally or simply to those which were considered unclean?

Could he have handled dead animals which were considered such?

I can’t say I have evidence to give in answering these questions, other than simply postulating them for thought though. I thank you for your educated thoughts on the subject, however.

God Bless,

Hi, DM.

I see many thoughts which need a detailed response in the last post, and I will probably need to wait until tomorrow or perhaps Thursday to really do so.

As a stop-gap, there are a some details I can answer now.

I do understand “sin offering” to be for the same reason(s) in different places in scripture, but the word “sin” has more than one meaning.

It is correct that the sin offering could have been for things that are symbolic breaking of the commandments more than physical damage – and since that isn’t obvious to a first time reading of the text – I’ll give more details later.

Rather than revisit meaning of “their” purification, at this time, I would rather just make a suggestion of why I am keeping options open regarding the sin offering vs. the ransom and perhaps that will stimulate some thought.

The ransom was required in exchange for the events which happened in Egypt, and in the desert following. Although we have not discussed in detail what the contract (covenant) and violations are – I would ask, for the moment, that you entertain the idea that a violation of the terms occurred somewhere between Abraham and the time the Israelites “sold” themselves to the Egyptians as slaves.

Typically today, one would find that if they failed to fulfill a contract (eg: pay a water bill or property tax by the due date specified in the contract – that the person typically becomes liable to a fine.)
The small fine is what I would understand as an “atonement” or “reparation” for failing to fulfill the contract on time.
In my thinking the Atonement is distinct from the actual value of the damage, although many people speak of the entire payment “principle” and “fee” as “atonement.”

But:
eg: in a car wreck, in my mind, the atonement is for “pain and suffering” not really for the value of the medical bill, nor the value of the destroyed vehicle.

The atonement has the purpose of discouraging people from taking advantage of the good will of one of the parties in a contract by giving the offended party something more as a token of good will, (incentive not to call the collections agencies in…)

Just so, I would observe, that a person who is fails to pay a second time is increasing the fine (eg:need for atonement).
And often times, the one offended will either hand them over to the collection agencies (eg:hell) or will require that they make a payment of at least a small amount in addition to the fine (a sacrifice, at minimum symbolic).

In my eyes, the “ransom” being required for all firstborn sons is one possible way to look at the events in Egypt eg: that Israel dared sell itself as a whole into slavery even though it belonged to God – eg: they sold the firstborn son of God (eg:the nation israel, figuratively) into slavery without permission. So, now, they OWE God their firstborn (and priestly) sons to repay God what is lost – in addition to this, they owe an atoning sacrifice.

Just so, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are coming to the temple in accordance with the law – to pay back what is owed because of what happened in Egypt by their fore-fathers.
They owe a value for their firstborn son – (the debit itself) – and an atonement in addition (I presume the bird is the atoning sacrifice).

Given this type of reasoning, I would offer an additional way to look at the sacrifices being made in the temple.

Should the parents be given a child by God, they owe it to him. But since the killing of children (not adults) in sacrifice is not permitted – they owe something of like value (horror to suggest, I know) to a child – eg: a young, immature lamb. But also, In addition, there is a “fine” because the payment is still later than originally expected – eg: an “atonement” (fee).

Symbolically, one has to discover what the relationship is between the signs sheep, child, slavery, death, stillborn, etc.
To get an idea of what the individual sacrifices are for.

Should the child die – this may be looked at in multiple ways, eg:the parents failed (sinned) to produce offspring, or perhaps the parents are the “cause” of death for their child, as their disobedience has caused the death – or again, perhaps the parents do not owe God for the loan of a child which did not live. (These are possibilities that need to be sorted out in how they do/or don’t apply.)

without expounding a theory in detail, I would simply note that young things are considered of less value than adult things.

So, I would conjecture, that perhaps the holocost animal ransoms or “pays” for the “damage” done. Eg: it satisfies the “original” bill – but the non-holocost item is more of an atoning sort of sacrifice (eg: a “fee”).

–A detailed study, I can’t go into now – but suffice it to say that the price of the child is a lamb and the late fee (a low cost bird for atonement) is a new bird.

The sin may refer to the sin incurred in Egypt, or it may refer to a sin incurred at the death/loss of a child, or perhaps to getting blood on the child, etc. So understanding which sin applies to which physical event is the key to definitively answering the question of whether or not an “actual” sin is implied by the sin offering, or an ancestral sin – and if it applies to Mary.

I’ll let you think about that for today, and try to be more scriptural and thorough at a later time. I’d be interested in the kinds of thoughts this causes – and what kind of feelings that evokes regarding apologetics – eg: like defensive, confusing, silly, that kind of stuff.

God bless you very much this day.

Hi,

Didn’t Jesus say this… whatever two or more of you agree on on this earth in My name, that is shall be done for you by my Father in heaven?
Hmmmm…
(KJV)
1Cori 14:29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
1Cori 14:30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
KJV:
Matth 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
The reference of “two or three” gathered in “my name” also references the general context of the law of Moses (the rules of inquisition) requiring at least two or three witnesses for a case to be judged.

The Matthian passage is between comments on the Keys of the Church regarding loosing, binding and judgment of brothers … and is followed by Peter’s lawyerly question about forgiving one’s brother.

Were you also intending my wife’s activity in dropping off a son of mine to the Seventh Day Adventist School? or just that she recovered?
🤷
We both agreed that mountain roads were dangerous out west and should be fixed, and I prayed… and… here we go…

Good that your wife is doing better.
Thanks, she is physically a bit better – but between the preganancy and her messed up intestines, the continuing prayers are much appreciated.

BTW, – this is where she wrecked – Flat old Highway-30 – the white painted skid mark(singular) is hers, and (if you can see it) the barely visible black/red outlines ones further up are from the man who died at the same place a couple weeks back (eg: by a truck doing the same thing at the exact same place…Turning right!)
He probably needs prayers in addition to his family which has just been re-reminded of the problem by my wife’s accident.

Thanks Image Shack!

Now, on to the questions in a bit more detail…
