Did Mother Mary have other children?

Yes! Mary most certainly had other children. Trust me I know. I am one of them. Anybody that doesn’t have Mary as there mother really has no say in this discussion.

Who are you to tell me about my mother!

From what I understand the language of the time had no word for brother in the sence that we use the term brother today. So the texts that say Yeshua had brothers or sisters does not proove anything either way.

The closest thing you get to a proof text is Yeshua giving her to an appostle to be his mother.

All the rest is tradition and logic. And dare I say Old Testament prophecy.
This first part of your response adds so much to Scripture that it’s almost funny and the latter portion completely denies Scripture as it is written. The heights that some will traverse in distorting and refuting truth to further their agenda is proposterous.

No, the first part of the comment adds nothing to Sacred Scripture. The Bible is clear that Mary, the Mother of God, is also the Mother to the followers of Jesus aka Christians. Just read Rev. 12!

I believe what you said here to be correct. Scripture also paints a quite clear picture that Mary and Joseph had a normal marriage and also had children besides Jesus. Scripture firstly tells us that Jospeh did not have relations with Mary UNTIL Jesus was born. It also states that Jesus was Mary’s FIRSTBORN, a son. It also goes on to name Jesus’ brothers and also refers to some of them by name later on in the NT. It also speaks of Jesus’ sisters although it doesn’t name them. There is just far too much evidence of Jesus coming from a normal family with other brothers and sisters than to try and refute it.
This comment is SO Revolting! I’m going to vomit.

May the Lord have mercy on you and others like you that claim to be “Christian”, but twist the Scriptures to substantiate heresy!

The brazen gaul you have to defame the Holy Trinity, The Theotokos and St. Joseph is coming from Satan…Only he & the demons & their followers would dare to share in your contempt for the honor of God’s own Mother. Dishonor to her is dishonor to Jesus.

May God have mercy on your soul!

Quite clear? What* is* clear is that the Apostolic Christian churches think otherwise. I think that you will agree that those in disagreement with you would certainly include many people who are far more learned in the scriptures than you. So I am left wondering, doesn’t that fact give you some pause about declaring what you find to be “quite clear”.

**John 19:
25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.**

According to some posters on other forums, they say Mother mary did have other children. Ok, so if Mother mary had more children, than why did Jesus say the above words when Mother Mary’s other children could very well have taken care of her? Does it also mean that the other children were black sheep and not capable of taking care of their mother, or does it also mean that Mother Mary was not a good mother to them, but only to Jesus?
Mary the Mother of OUR Lord never had any other children but Jesus

You read into the passages. Mary isn’t mentioned anywhere past the Book of Acts.

Now we go back into the “you don’t know what you are reading” mode again. It’s all part of the game to discredit Scripture and discourage folks from reading the truth while furthering this propaganda to complete the Roman Catholic circle. I was a cradle Catholic for nearly 35 years and I have heard all of the lame rhetoric to try and paint the Catholic picture of the perpetual Virgin. The Bible never once suggests that Mary and Joseph didn’t have a normal marriage and even says that they didn’t have relations UNTIL Jesus was born. It also says that Jesus was Mary’s FIRSTBORN, a son and it goes on to name Jesus’ brothers by name and even refers to them in later Scriptures. You have to do alot of mental gymnastics to deny all of this. Sorry, I’m not buying in.

I would add that if scripture did paint “a quite clear picture”, we wouldn’t have to debate this at all would we?

I would offer you this in return:

One could argue that Matt 13: 55-56 clearly shows that Mary had other children.

Take a look at Matt 27: 56 This shows that there was another Mary that was the mother to James and Joseph that are spoken about in Matt 13: 55-56

Also, Firstborn was a legal term referring to the child who first “opens the womb” (Ex 13:2)

If a child were termed “firstborn” only when other children followed, how could the law of Moses have required that the “firstborn” be consecrated soon after birth, before the other children arrived (Ex 13:2,12,15; Lk 2:21-24)?

We could debate this all night long I suppose, but the point made here is that Scripture points to Joseph and Mary having a normal marriage with children in many verses in Scripture where as there is nothing there to suggest otherwise. One must take Scripture out of context and twist and turn much to get otherwise.

Says your interpretation of the Bible?

Error #1 Refuted

Matthew 1:24-25: Until she brought forth a son

Matthew 1:24-25
24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son.

The word *until *here just says what happened up to the time of Christ’s birth. It doesn’t imply anything about what happened after that, although our modern use of the word until seems to imply that. For an example of this, look at 2 Samuel 6:23, which says, “Michal the daughter of Saul had no children till the day of her death.” We’re obviously not supposed to assume that she had children after she died.

Other Examples of “Until” That Do Not Require Cessation of Action

Genesis 8:7
The raven “did not return TILL the waters were dried up…” Did the raven ever return?

Deuteronomy 34:6 (Knox)
No one knew the location of his grave “until this present day” But we know that no one has known it since that day either.

1 Maccabees 5:54
“…not one of them was slain TILL they had returned in peace.” Were Judas Maccabeus and his troops killed when they returned?

Luke 1:80
“And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel.” The Greek word translated “until” in this passage is heos, the same word used in Matthew 1:25. The child spoken of is John the Baptist who, after as well as before he appeared in public, resided in the desert (cf. Matt. 3:1, Mark 1:3,4; Luke 3:2).
It also says that Jesus was Mary’s FIRSTBORN

A title given to the child that opened the womb even if that child turned out to be an only child. Do a little research into Jewish customs, and you will see this is true.

I think I can say the same thing to you at this point.
Thanks but I’ve heard it all before. I was a cradle Catholic for almost 35 years. I don’t share in these lengthy “try to explain it away” sessions. We can do this same thing to lengths that would explain away the Trinity as well. I wouldn’t buy into that either. Sorry, the Bible goes to much greater lengths to shed light on Mary and Joseph having a normal marriage than not.

Ah, when fingers get pointed and accusations get made such as this, I back off. It has regressed…
It began to regress when you popped off about King Henry VIII. You know what you did and why.🙂

I agree with you.

I’ve been part of these “did Mary have other children” discussions before on this forum and have seen the lengthy explanations and the discussions about the use of the word “until” beyond normal comprehension.

I’ll be checking in to see how long this thread gets before the real name calling begins and the moderator locks the thread.

Happy New Year - enjoy your discussion!

But you did not address my post. You may like to carve out an interesting position as a sola scriptura Anglican, but you still have to address the fact that all Apostolic churches have had the same scripture as you do, but have reached a conclusion that differs from yours. ISTM that it takes enormous confidence to assert not only that everyone was wrong for all those years, but that, moreover, their error is, in effect, “quite clear”. What makes you so sure?

It began to regress when you popped off about King Henry VIII. You know what you did and why.🙂
Actually I prayed about it after I logged off and was about to go to bed. I should have included King Henry in my original post, instead of quickly trying to get it in there. I also should have worded it differently. My point was, King Henry started your church. I don’t understand much more than that about your faith. Who makes decisions in the case of interpretation for you guys?

I will admit that I know little of your faith, and actually ask you about it, instead of saying I know what is correct about your own faith.

While I am glad you believe what you believe in, specially enough to be here doing this, you are wrong. Your anger starts to show with more and more posts about any topic I have seen you on. Shouldn’t be angry my friend, specially if you are right. 😉
