I was blessed by a bishop today, did the cross and medal I was wearing around my neck
at the time get blessed as well? He didn’t specifically bless them, he was just genetically blessing.
Sorry if this is in the wrong place- it’s my first time!

No, I believe that it was just oh who were blessed. There is a separate form of prayer used for blessing sacramentals (crucifixes, Miraculous Medals, etc.).

May God bless you abundantly and forever, especially as you join CAF!! 🙂

I didnt get a special prayer, the priest just told me to dip my siant chirstopher medalion in the holy water and make the sign of the cross.

That is wrong. YOU cannot make the medallion into a sacramental.

No; the minister must intend to bless whatever it is. If he didn’t intend to bless the medals, etc. then they remain unblessed.

On the other hand, if, say, the Pope during a huge huge gathering states that he intends to bless the religious items of all present AND listening to TV, radio, and Internet, the blessing DOES carry. It all goes to intention.

I agree to an extent but if the priest told him to do it then isn’t that on the priest’s authority? Elisha told Naaman to wash in the Jordan 7 times through a messenger and he was healed of leprosy. Just curious because it doesn’t seem like the poster was doing it on his own.

We don’t take Scripture and mold it to suit our own preferences.

Just because a priest tells someone to dip an object and voila! a sacramental does not make it so. Naaman’s case was not the blessing of a sacramental, and Elisha was not a Catholic priest. It’s not even the holy water that makes an object a sacramental. Only one in Holy Orders can bless an object into a sacramental and can do so even if holy water were not available, because it is the BLESSING that counts.

I’m just saying a Catholic Priest gave him instruction to receive a blessing and he did it. I’m not even implying it would work with anything else or anyone else but in this instance the Priest gave him specific instructions on what to do in order to bless the object.

I’m not sure if it was blessed but at the same time I don’t want to pass judgement on the Priest either.

Absolutely not. If a priest told you to dip the host into the chalice and self communicate do you think that makes it okay?

What’s that got to do with anything?

We’re talking about the theology of blessings and how they are effective, not self-intinction. The two don’t even compare.

The minister MUST bless the object for it to be blessed, and to bless it, he must intend to bless it. Dipping it in Holy Water on a priest’s instruction does NOT make the object blessed.

No one’s passing judgment on the priest, only whether the instruction made for a blessed object or not. It does not.

You obviously miss my point. It is that just because the priest tells you to do something it does not mean it is correct!!

Yes, I did miss your point, because your were stating “absolutely not” to a post of mine that you quoted and nonetheless agree with. Stating “absolutely not” to a point you actually agree with is confusing to say the least.

Hello all,
Since I do not really want to start a new thread when there is a subject bordering to my own question allready rolling, I decided to add my own question to this one allready in existence.
Myself and a group of my fellow church goers recieved the blessing of several St Benedict medals at once. Afterwards I saw that the priest, who I have nothing but praise for - he is doing a great job in my small parish, had not removed all of the medals from the small plastic bags. Since the holy water never touched those medals, did they get blessed?

Yes, I believe that as long as the intention was there (which it was), then all of the medals were blessed. It’s like on Palm Sunday when your palms may or may not be sprinkled with holy water, but they were still blessed because of the prayer and intention.

May God bless you abundantly and forever! And welcome to CAF! 🙂

Irrelevant since the priest didn’t give those instructions and would not.

Its possible that he said a quick blessing prayer quietly since I did hand it to him and he held it for a while so maybe I was wrong to say their was no prayer, but he did tell me to do the holy water and cross part which apparently is not important.

That would be because I replied to you in error instead of the other poster! Apologies.
