Did my friend sin by doing this?

My friend from school who’s name is Jerome, said that his religion was “Jeroman Catholic”. He is what you would call a class clown but also a fairly devout Catholic. I don’t think he was trying to be irreverant in any way and he certainly didn’t say this because he thought he was in any way greater than God. Just as a little joke. Was this a sin?
 
I always tease people by telling them I’m a “Zoroastrian Catholic.” Or a “Baptist Jehovas Witness Catholic.” Or something like that.

People need to lighten up! 😉 Having fun isn’t a sin!
 
I don’t know with certainty, but I doubt that your friend was sinning unless he was actually trying to mock the Church or something, but you yourself doubt that.
 
Sounds to me like he was just trying to make a play on “Roman Catholic.” I found it quite amusing. Like the joke… What do you call a sleepwalking nun? A Roamin’ Catholic. 🙂
 
without even reading your post, the answer is we don’t know, God alone knows, and the priest in confession if the friend goes. No one can say, except for the priest in confession that so and so has done a sin. One can say, so and so has done an action which is objectively sinful, but that is as far as the conversation goes. Most of us need to devote time to our own sins and spiritual health 24/7 so have no leisure for contemplating the supposed sins of others.
 
well when I was a baptist I used to say I was a Southern Charismatic Baptist with a non-traditional evangelical flair. To say one is a Jeroman Catholic all things considered it sounds like he was making a play on several words, one being his name, two being the Roman Catholic Church and three since St. Jerome was one of the more notable Catholics well, following Orthodox teachings laid down by the early Church fathers is hardly heretical. I really think its a play on words
 
If he was trying to cause scandal, or mock the Church then yes he was indeed sinning. BUT if he only meant it a an innocent joke than NO it’s not a sin. Some of the greatest saints had humor. Why can’t your friend?😉

Absolutely agree with annie.
Determining the condition of another’s soul is not our call.
 
This makes me think of the time I laughed at something in Church, and when Sister looked at me, I must have looked like I thought I was in big trouble. I apologized, and Sister replied, “If you can’t laugh in church, where CAN you laugh?”
I think your friend was making a cute pun, and there is no sin involved. Lighten up. I’ll bet God even chuckled… If Jesus once wept, you can bet He laughed, too…
