I was always under the assumption that St Anne was barren before her prayers were answered and she gave birth to Our Lady. Yet in John’s Gospel chap 19 verse 25, he mentions that “standing by the cross were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene”.
I thought that Mary wife of Clopas was Our Lady’s cousin based on the fact the first name was the same as Our Lady and also because the word “brethren” (or sister) doesn’t necessarily mean “brother” but a relative.
I’m reading The Life of Christ (copyright 1958) by Bishop Sheen and he says that Mary, wife of Clopas, was Our Lady’s sister.
Can someone clarify this for me?
