Did Saint Nicholas really slap Arius in the face?

That is the traditional account, yes. Like all ancient accounts that have been passed down orally there may be embellishments and slightly different versions, but the general account is indeed that St. Nicholas slapped or punched Arius for blaspheming the Son during the Council of Nicaea.

Yes! To smack some sense into him. Rightfully so, I suspect. Though, he probably went to confession after that. I would if I did, for my guilt would eat me!

I have heard a couple of versions. In one he slapped him; in the other he flattened him.

From what I read those in charge immediately chastised Saint Nicholas and stripped him of his insignia as bishop. That night they all had the same dream in which God was restoring the insignia to him. So the next day they restored the insignia to him. That seems to indicate that he had nothing to repent of.

I think in the New Testament St.Paul took no messing when he called one of the high priests a whitewashed wall.

St. Nicholas is my patron. Yep, as far as I know, he did indeed slap, or punch, Arius. I’ve always liked this story as a reminder that even the holiest of people are human too.

Got away with it? No. He was still chastised soundly over it.

Was reinstated due to a miracle convincing the council fathers that he was right, even if he’d gone too far? Absolutely…
