Did St. Luke paint an image of Our Lady?

I saw someone post this on facebook so I looked it up myself. It seems very fake to me, is this real? If so, may I get more information on it?

“This image of Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, was painted by St. Luke. It was carried by St. Thomas the apostle to India about one thousand, nine hundred and fifty years ago. Today, Mary continues to be venerated through this painting. It is kept at the main altar in the Church of Mount St. Thomas in Madras, India, the place where St. Thomas was martyred for the Catholic Faith. We see that devotion to Mary goes back to the time of the apostles, who were personally devoted to the Mother of God. It’s very stylized; like byzantine almost, but an earlier form. And she looks very european, when in fact, she was a near-eastern Jew. I highly doubt it was done during apostolic times.

It’s a real painting but I highly doubt Luke painted it. Possibly one of his successors might have and they just tacked his name on it. People in the old days would do that with a writing or a piece of art hoping to give it more fame.

I’ve seen A.D. 3rd Century(Early 200’s at that by all acounts) Christian paintings in the catacombs depicting mary and the child jesus and this(picture of our lady given in the link) looks far superior to it not to mention in far better condition. I would be sceptical that it is in fact original but it is lovely all the same.

I don’t think she looks very European, although baby Jesus’ nose is super straight. But I would love to know the truth of this:

I don’t know about the painting, but I believe that the priest who started The Fatima Network, Father Gruner (This appears to be his website.), has been suspended from the priesthood. Before I knew this, I read online, I think, or something, that I could get a free scapular from them and so I called up and asked for one, and then they sent the scapular but they also kept sending me all kinds of literature about how the Catholic church is wrong or something, or maybe it was just that the church needs to consecrate Russia to Mary and hasn’t or something (I read some of the literature but not all of it), even though I believe the official stance of the Catholic church is that Pope John Paul 2 did do so when he consecrated the world to Mary… and their probably sending their literature to the wrong person anyway since I’m not even officially Catholic yet - I guess I’m getting a little off the subject. Anyway, this is what I’ve heard. Just thought you might want to know this about this web site.

It is beautiful but it was not painted by St Luke…

There is numerous icons which claim to be the original painted by Saint Luke. The icons of The Theotokos of Vladimir and The Theotokos of Częstochowa are also claimed to have been painted by Saint Luke.

Story and all. I believe.

I read some of the speculative answers on this thread and am reminded that it was [St. Thomas] who the story says carried it to India.

Right, the oral tradition is Luke used a table top of a table Jesus built. I always thought it was the Black Madonna. Interesting
