Did the author of Matthew or Luke lie?

I have 9 great grandfathers. One of my great grandmothers was widowed and re-married.

However, the audience for whom that Gospel was intended, and the author of that Gospel, found it of utmost importance.

The only errors from the scriptures are the fallible interpretations of men.

It is not uncommon in the Middle East for cultures to use two names for individuals (consider Matthew and Levi, Joseph and Zaphenath-Paneuh, Jacob and Israel, etc.), nor is it uncommon in Middle Eastern literature to condense genealogies. This doesn’t make it a lie. Rather than make an accusation, you might try to read the literature in the context in which it was written.

Mistake, thanks for catching it! I have 9 great grandparents.

However, if there were divorces/deaths remarriages I could have 9 great grandfathers.

There are so many historical errors in the Bible is could not be God’s intent to present an accurate account of history. The Bible is written by men inspired by God to be with error with regard to faith and morals. That is the Catholic teaching!

The church who gave us the scriptures are the interpreter of those scripture. Do you have a specific question?

How did you know that?
Because Heli and Joachim are interchangeable names since they similar linguistically, so that would mean it was tracing Mary’s lineage through her father who would also be Joseph’s father-in-law.
