Did the Catholic Church play a role in Canadian residential schools? If so, why do such a terrible thing if we are not called to forced conversion?

There are threads begun by Canadians on this topic. Use the search function and there’s plenty to read.
Keep in mind, that there is literally not one era where people thought they were doing good, but screwed it up royally in the name of religion.
