Did the Catholic Church try to kill Luther

I work for a public school district (as support staff) and in my journeys today I popped in a class where the teacher was talking about the Reformation. She is a Protestant so it was definitely one sided. She mentioned to the class that the Catholic Church had tried to hunt down and kill Luther for 15 years. I have never heard or read this anywhere. Has anyone else? Where would I find this information?
 
I would definitely ask her for the source for that statement (nicely, of course).

And hope that she doesn’t respond, “The DaVinci Code, naturally”.
 
I would definitely ask her for a source. This sounds contrived. I would also report her to the principal of the school if she is unable to produce a credible source. She shouldn’t be teaching lies about any faith, Catholic or Protestant.
 
He wasn’t hunted down by the Church, but my understanding is that the Edict of Worms, under the Holy Roman Emperor, proclaimed him to be a criminal and that killing him would not inccur penalty. That was by the Holy Roman Empire, however, and not the Church.
 
The Pope also ordered Martin Luther to Rome. His contemporaries all commented that, if Luther went, he would not survive the journey. Remember, alot of money was at stake (forgive the pun).

Get it right it was the Diet of Worms. They sat Luther down in a chair fear factor style and made him eat a bowl of worms or change his ways.
 
Right, that was the Diet of Worms when they made him eat the creepy crawlies, but after he refused to submit to the Pope’s authority to force him to eat nightcrawlers, the Edict (in modern English “Eat It”) of Worms was issued, recording the common jeer of the audience at the Diet. 😉
 
Sounds like she got her info from the same sources that some of these people did 😛

Anti-catholic hate is alive and well despite forty years of trying to be part of the group. We are like the Jews who thought acting like good Germans would spare them persecution. They hate us not for what we do but for what we are.

A query however - what was the lesson she was teaching? I was under the impression that it was unconstitutional to teach religion in a public school in the states. Or was this supposed to be a history lesson? In which case the teacher should be reported for incompletence and lack of subject specific knowledge. As others have pointed it was the Empire not the Church which was hunting for Luther.
 
Obviously, the civil authorities would have been the ones to bear the sword against Luther. The Church, as an institution, does not and did not fulfill that role.

But, this still begs the question as to what extent, if any, there was collusion between civil and church authorities. Clearly, significant church interests were at stake.

Anybody have any info. on that?

The papal Brief to Cajetan (23 August), which was handed to Luther at Nuremberg on his way home, in which the pope, contrary to all canonical precedents, demands the most summary action in regard to the uncondemned and unexcommunicated “child of iniquity”, asks the aid of the emperor, in the event of Luther’s refusal to appear in Rome, to place him under forcible arrest, was no doubt written in Germany, and is an evident forgery (Beard, op. cit., 257-258; Ranke, “Deutsche Gesch.” VI, 97-98). Like all forged papal documents, it still shows a surprising vitality, and is found in every biography of Luther.

I think the lesson to learn here, including from some of the ignorant answers in this thread, is that in America history is taught by protestants and others hostile to the Church. Are we really surprised they’d stoop so low? Martin Luther himself said it is acceptable to lie and commit violence to win souls. And of course Hitler invoked Luther to dupe protestants into supporting the anti-Catholic national socialist party. You don’t hear that from protestants, do you?

Most of the clap-trap you see against the Catholic Church is fabricated protestant triumphalism.

I am much in favor - for this very reason - of separation of Church and State. I support the ACLU thoroughly on this crusade, because what these fundamentalists have in mind is not true religion, but protestant revisionism.

Keep your King James bible out of my school, thank you very much.

The ACLU’s roots originated in communism. Read the history. They are pro-abortion, pro-eugenics, pro pornography, pro same sex marriage etc. . . .

They are hostile to any notion of God in public which is a far cry from any desirable form of “separation of church and state.” Hmm. It’s difficult to see how any orthodox and well informed Catholic could support them.

I don’t physically support them. I support them passively. If they are able to stop fundamentalists from gaining official power in our society, that would be just fine with me.

If not the ACLU, who is going to stop the fundamentalists?

What is a fundamentalist in your view? And, what do you think needs to be stopped?

Would you rather have avowed atheists in power than Christians? This makes no sense to me.
