Did the Church change Doctrine as well as Discipline about receiving from the chalice?

Before the Council of Trent, didn’t the Church teach that when Jesus said to the disciples ‘drink this, all of you’, the ‘you’ referred only to those present, symbolically the bishops and all the clergy?

So when the Church allows the faithful to receive from the chalice in the Novus Ordo mass, is this just a change of discipline, or isn’t it actually a change in the doctrinal interpretation of the words of Our Lord?

I don’t have a problem with this interpretation, in fact it seems logical that Our Lord would mean the same thing in distributing the bread and the wine. All the same, I thought the Church never taught error - if there is a doctrinal rather than a disciplinary matter at stake here, then either the Church taught wrongly pre-Vatican II or is teaching error now? How is this explained?

The early Christians received under both species. That was discontinued to combat the heresy that Christ was not fully present under each specie. After centuries of receiving only under the bread specie, that heresy is no longer present so receiving under both species is now allowed.

The Church is careful to repeatedly state that the only reason to offer the chalice with the Precious Blood is because it’s a fuller symbol of a meal. It also goes to great pains to make clear that you receive Christ, Body, Blood, Divinity and Spirit whether you receive only a Host, only from the Chalice or both species.

No. because the command to consume both speices only applies to the clergy, specifically the celebrant of the Mass. This was true at the Last Supper, was true at Trent and is true now.

No one, outside of the celebrant, is doctrinally bound by Christ’s command to partake of both species.

There is a discipline that allows other to recieve both speices. This something that the Church may allow or disallow as circumstances dictate.

Furthermore, during Papal Masses, observe how the Curia communicates. They don’t receive under both species, unless, certain cardinals are concelebrating with the Holy Father. For example, if Cardinal Arinze and Cardinal Foley are concelebrating Mass with the Holy Father, then they will communicate under both species. However, if Cardinal Arinze and Cardinal Foley are at the Mass wearing choir dress, then they only communicate under the normal form.

Furthermore, when the number of communicants is of a great number, then having the option of receiving under both species does not apply.
