Did the Church get rid of purgatory?

My question is does the Church teach purgatory. i was having a conversation with a brother and he said that the church did away with purgatory about ten years ago. and i told him then how is it that my catechism has a page on purgatory in it. any help would be great. thanks Vivat Jesus!
