Did the church slaughter 50 million people?

A friend of mine who is a evangelical, but attends a Baptist church told me that the first two popes slaughtered Christians and throughout the centuries over 50 million bible believing Christians were killed by the catholic church. Is there a book I could read to find out the facts on inquisition?
