Did the early Christians know about the Trinity?

This is my first post; thank you for your time reading it.
I received an e-mail from a friend today who had copied a post from another web site. The post stated the Doctrine of the Trinity was not an established teaching to early Christians, and was not known to them as it should have been if it had been taught by the Apostles. The writer states that the Doctrine was based upon political needs by the emperors, and forced upon them by the Catholic Church. He also states that the “mystery” doctrine has been forced upon Christians for 1700 years, and anyone who questions it is branded a heritic.
I would be glad to share the source, and the entire article.
