Did the election cause you to cross off

family from the possible “guardian of my children” list? I mean, much more family than you possibly imagined to be crossed off? I was surprised on how much I disagree with a LARGE majority of my family, to the point that I had to cross off some of them from being possible guardians in the case of an unfortunate accident on my part. I think I’m leaning more toward friends who are solid Catholics than all of my family (well, I have one or two family members who may be promising, a few more conversations will either make or break the deal).

Interesting… we were just having this very conversation the other night… in light of our own “family and politics” (see my thread )…
We don’t have a living will… and decided this is something we really need to take care of. It’s a shame we can’t find immediate family that will fill this roll, you know? Makes me sad.

I know who’s who at the zoo on this, but then I am older. My cousin’s life view is good, one of my sister’s, and my BFF. my DH’s cousin and my BFF will handle financial matters.

I’m a little confused by this statement… why would you cross someone off your list. Did they vote Republican?

I’m completely serious here… We elected a President who by virtue of his election has already begun to restore our stature around the world, by virtue of his election has re-opened talks with Iraq so that our troops won’t be there illegally when the UN mandate runs out Jan 1st…

We elected a President who’s policies, from all statistical and historical information we have should actually decrease the number of abortions each year. (based upon the Catholic Alliance Research and historical data form the Clinton years)

We ousted a party who “claims” to be Pro-Life but who’s policies have actually begun to increase abortions again after drastic decreases during the 90s…

We didn’t elect a man who claimed that he wanted to reverse RvW but who has stated for years his belief that it should be allowed in cases of rape or incest. A position our voters guide denounced as being NOT pro-life. This position is also one we can’t win because you can’t allow “murder” for difficult social situations.

So before you begin to judge your family so harshly I would encourage you to take a deeper look into the facts of the situation.

We have open and honest discussions with friends and family. When our son was young enough that we needed to choose guardians, we knew exactly what each family member or close friend held as personal values and morals.

No election would have “revealed” a deep dark secret in values or morals.

This is a much better post than mine, I should have just left it at this as it was the point I was trying to make. Thus there could be many reasons someone voted the way they did. If they are good people, you might be surprised at their reasons.

My first issue is regarding life. This is not an issue that is discussed within the family. I originally assumed that most of my family, being Catholic, would be pro-life in all stages, but this election proved otherwise. When I sent them information regarding the candidates’ positions on life issues, many were openly “offended” as they stated. As an adoptee and a Catholic(which they all know that I’m adopted) that cut through my heart like a knife. They all have celebrated my adoption through the years, but have no regard for others unborn children. I do NOT want my dd being taught that if I were not around. I guess to them, I just got “lucky” for being “chosen” to have a chance to live.

Then the issues regarding unions between those with same-sex attraction, sorry, I do NOT want my dd being raised to think that that is acceptable. I want her to know the TRUTH of God’s Word.

So, do not ASSUME that I am unjustly making judgments of my family. If you have children, you know how precious they are and how, if you were no longer there to raise them that you’d want someone who would love them and teach them as you would. If that is judgement that you do not like, well, welcome to reality, every parent makes this judgement. I’m sure that many in my family who would have considered me to be guardians have now taken me off of their lists too because of my “Catholic” thinking (though they are Catholic too). Would you say that they too are too judgemental?

We still get along, however, I will not agree with the crowd if it goes against Church teaching. I simply point out to them that if they are publicly stating they are Catholic then they must agree with the Church at the very least, and actually practice their faith at the very most.

If I do choose my friends as guardians, if ever the day came, my family would be EXTREMELY upset. However, besides during work hours, I do not see my family besides on special occassions (most didn’t even phone when my dd was hospitalized, but complained when I couldn’t make it to functions when she was too sick) but the couple who I would think of making guardians I see and/or speak with at least once per week and we’re involved in each other’s lives.

Why continue with this stuff now that elections are over?

It’s pretty clear that no one’s minds are being changed by what is said regarding the former candidate or the president elect, so why go on wit this stuff?

Honestly, do you think you are the only one who can form an opinion about this topic? Because you are coming off as though you think everyone else is grossly uninformed and you know better, it’s gotten old.

Obama won the election, we are well aware, but we do not all have to like him, or be convinced that he is awesome, he’ll be the president regardless.
