No, Pope Francis never said that.
I originally thought that perhaps Pope Francis was being misquoted. The article stated that Pope Francis said this “on Monday.” I looked at the date of the article (September 10, 2015) and then went to the Vatican website and looked up Pope Francis’ homily and statements from that Monday (September 7, 2015). Nothing close to those statements was uttered by Pope Francis on that date.
Then I remembered that it sounded familiar and, sure enough, this is a common false internet story that is passed around. The only “source” of that statement is from a satire news website which produces fake news. Unfortunately other news websites are unaware of the origins and continue to spread this fake story.
It is easy to see because every time this is reposted somewhere it says “On Monday…” So when this story is posted on websites in July, August, September, etc. it always says that this past Monday Pope Francis said this exact statement. Its clearly originates from the same fake news site.
