Did the Pope's visit to the United States, change anyone’s opinion of Pope Benedict XVI or the Catholic Church?

Did the Pope’s visit to the United States, change anyone’s opinion (in a positive way) of Pope Benedict XVI or the Catholic Church?

**Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the U.S., made me proud to be a Roman Catholic. 👍 **

**What was your impression of the Pope? **
 
Well, I know it’s crazy, but before his visit all of the pictures I ever saw of him were with dark circles under his eyes and a frown. So he always reminded me of Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars and I was having trouble reconciling this; Now I don’t feel that way.

Hearing him speak, I realize that of course this is not the case.
 
I voted “no” because his visit didn’t really change my already positive impression of him.
 
I work with a fairly typical Catholic who “has her own ideas” about Church teaching and thinks that The DaVinci Code “could be possible” and “if Jesus became human, he would have been married.” Yada yada yada.

She was quite negative about “Der Rottweiler” and thought of him as distant an aloof because he doesn’t play the media in the same way that JP2 did. But after the Papal visit, she had a much more positive sense of him as a person and as a caring pastor. She was particularly impressed with the way he took charge of the priest scandal situation.

I believe she represents a fairly large group of Catholics whose Catholicism is “personal” rather than centered on Church teaching and Sacramental life.

I am extremely irritated with him for not fencing the Sacrament properly; i.e. for not mandating the denial of communion to Pelosi et al.

I am not going to debate it here, there is another thread devoted to it; suffice to say that I think an opportunity was lost.

I am afraid I don’t take him as seriously as I once did. He did grave damage to his credibility.
 
There’s always a critic. Even the Pope isn’t Catholic enough for some people - especially on CAF. 🤷
 
I voted Yes because I saw a change in the media coverage that has been more positive.

the holy father doesn’t run the details, after all this is a worldwide church. He can’t step on the toes of the other bishops. what goes on between Speaker Pelosi and her own bishop is private unless the bishop chooses to make it public.

I hear you but I don’t buy it.

As I said, I believe an opportunity was lost but again, there is already a thread on the subject and I don’t want to hi-jack this one.

It was asked whether the visit changed my perception of him.

It did, this is why.

I voted “Yes”, because I heard that he met with some of those who had been abused by priests. If he did, that suggests that Rome is acknowledging its responsibility of care to them.​
