Did the Rosary change in last 100 years?

It might be age related. My friend is in his early 70s. He went to Catholic schools from 1st grade through high school. Was an alter boy. Attended mass regularly.

He never heard of praying the rosary while meditating on the mysteries until he came back to the Catholic church, recently.

I learned the mysteriesand what days they were said in the 1950’s when my parents prayed it with our family. I didn’t learn until much later that a rosary was 15 mysteries.
 
I kind of don’t see the point of not meditating on the mysteries but that’s just me. 🤷 I do my scriptural rosary 98% of the time (using my mp3). The only time I don’t is if I don’t have it with me or I’m doing it with a group (public recitation). It just feels different and it’s easier for my mind to wander. Just my opinion.

This is the thing with private devotions like the rosary. They are meant to aid one’s spirituality not be an end in themselves, yes? So, whatever helps us is fine as long as nothing in the devotion contradicts Church teachings, of course. 🙂

The rosary hasn’t changed. If you look up Pope Leo XIII’s encyclicals on the rosary he writes a lot about meditating on the mysteries, and what they are. And he writes about them assuming those reading his letters are well aware of how to pray the rosary. He wrote about 8 letters on the devotion of the rosary.

However, we know that good catechesis ebbs and flows, and I’m sure there have been many times during history (Including post Vatican II) when people were not taught the rosary properly

Meditating on the mysteries has always been part of the rosary for me (born in 1977). The Fatima prayer and the Luminous mysteries are new… which means that it has changed and expanded, but both are optional…

I had a Catechist volunteering for me about ten years ago who never taught the Mysteries to the children when she was teaching them the Rosary because she thought they were too complicated.

When I found out about it, I pointed out to her that, since the whole point of the Rosary is the Mysteries, I would have preferred she teach them the Mysteries, and let them read the prayers off a page, rather than teach them the prayers without the Mysteries that go with them. She said, “Oh, I never thought of that.” The children were seven years old.
