I did the scenarios for the EMT job last Friday so that I could credential with the company and be released on my own with just a driver. I passed the scenarios and can now work with just a driver taking care of patients.

After the first portion which was CPR the ALS (advanced life support) supervisor running the scenarios said that I did well and I really should go to Paramedic school. After I completed the scenarios he asked if it was painful to do and I told him it wasn’t, just that I am rusty not having run a call in over 7 years. He told me that there are two types of people, those who are a genius, which I am not (he said it with a smile) and those that study and take what I just did serious. He said that I am the latter person because he could tell I studied before I came and did the scenarios. He also said that is why I need to go to Paramedic school. Because I take this very seriously. Those are the types of people they want in the company. They were nice commercial to and made me feel good about myself.

So, he said twice that I need to go to Paramedic class. My conflict comes in to play because all I want is to be an EMT and not a Paramedic. There are a couple reasons for that. One is my age. I am 42 years old. If I was in my 20s I would jump at the opportunity, but I’m not.

Second is that Paramedic school takes me from my kids for a year. It means that I will basically not see them for a full year. Reason being is that you have class, work, clinical, labs, ride time and studying. There is just not enough time in a day to fit my kids whom are a product of a divorce and need their daddy at their young ages. Again, in my 20s with no kids would have worked better.

Third is I don’t want that responsibility of being a Paramedic. Yes, there’s responsibility as an EMT, but not near as much. I don’t need to worry about pushing meds and knowing what meds to use at what time and how much to use. I could kill someone pushing the wrong med or amount.

Now, a plus side would be that I would get a 5 dollar raise to $16 an hour.

Am I wrong for my reasons? Am I being stupid?

My mom kinda agrees with me as does another family member.

I’m happy being an EMT, it gives me joy, and I think being a Paramedic would leave me scared that I’m gonna mess up everytime I run a call.

Any advice? Any rebuke? Any anything?

You have no obligation to pursue a job change and additional schooling merely because someone thinks you would be good at it/suggests it.

Your analysis of your current situation sounds reasonable to me. But even if it didn’t, it’s not my business or my decision. It’s yours. Bottom line: it doesn’t matter what other people think about your reasons. They are your reasons, and if you are satisfied that’s what is important.

I’m just stunned that EMTs only make $11 an you.God bless you. You’re a good dad.

Thank you!

I’m in a good company to be honest in regards to pay. I was told $10 an hour, but my first pay check was $11.00 an hour. I had to call and be sure it was correct.

The majority of private companies here in my county of Florida make minimum wage as an EMT.

🤷

Wow. My husband (with two college degrees mind you) works in a warehouse unloading trucks for $12.30 an hour and he’s not saving anyone’s life. 🤷
Thanks for all you do for your community.

No thanks really needed. I am happy to do it.

I think you should be honest with him about not wanting the advanced emt training. He might want THAT person and you might not be helping yourself by pretending to be someone that you’re not.

In Michigan, I’ve heard of one school that accepts paramedic training for reducing the amount of time that it takes to become a registered nurse. Even at 42, you might want to consider that. I can’t address your family concerns, but I see what you’re saying. I can understand that as a single parent, your kids need you.

When he interviewed me he asked if I wanted to be a paramedic and I let him know at that times that I wasn’t interested. So, he is already aware. I wonder if he is hoping I might change my mind.

As for becoming an RN, that is also something I don’t want to do. In that instance I prefer being out on the road in an ambulance, not in a hospital for my whole shift. Not to mention that the responsibility is as much or greater than a Paramedic.

You could be a hospice nurse. They go somewhere new ever couple of weeks. Or a home healthcare worker. Male nurses are really in demand, as some females have a hard time turning people, for example.

But I understand. either a person really wants to be a nurse, or they don’t.
Best wishes!

As per the statistics drawn from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in May 2012, the average annual salary of these professionals is $32,650, and the average hourly salary is $15.70. According to indeed.com, the average salary, which an EMT draws in the state of Florida, is $34,000.

You might check into other employers. Looks like you are getting the low end of the pay scale.

That’s average for the entire state. I live in a very low paying county job wise.

I cannot move out of county, nor do I want to move away from my two children. So, I am fine with my income as it is. Too much logistics involved with trying to get them back and forth and an ex-wife who isn’t too helpful with transportation back and forth.
