Today I missed Mass and was wondering if it qualified as a sin. Part of it might have been just because I wanted to stay home, but I also have OCD and sometimes I “breakdown” and begin hyperventilating and other similar effects. I had been feeling better for about half an hour, but was mildly concerned about breaking down again. I might have been using that concern as an excuse. Please help, scrupulous and confused.

Please talk with your priest.

In general, skipping Sunday Mass (or a Holy Day) because you want to stay home is a sin.

However, your OCD may or may not change things for you.

If you don’t have a spiritual advisor, I suggest getting one. Either way, go to confession, going to confession never hurts and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

God Bless.

Peace be with you Brother/sister DMITRIYL (I am guessing “Brother”).

Missing Holy Mass on a Day of obligation (Like a Sunday) is considered a sin if the reason is:
  1. Laziness / Sloth / could not care enough
  2. Have scheduled another fun event, knowing well of the Mass times.
  3. Not going to mass because you are angry / annoyed / displeased with someone (family member or otherwise).
However, it may not be considered a sin if:
  1. Sickness / illness prevents you from leaving the house for Mass or anything else, including parties and fun events.
  2. Fear of worsening of prevailing conditions, as well as risk of infecting others and yourself.
  3. Important life and death appointments.
  4. Weekend work related and long projects.
Still, as phil19034 mentioned; do talk to your priest the next time you go to reconciliation.
He will know best, as what I have provided here are my educated opinions.

Dominus vobiscum.
Andrew
