Did those who killed Jesus sin?

In discussing the fifth commandment (we were talking about how only God can give and take life and we must do the will of God, even if we have a cross to bear, like a severe illness) one of my 4th graders asked this question:

“Did the people who killed Jesus sin, since they were doing God’s will? God sent Jesus here to die for our sins, and He knew that someone had to put his son do death. So did that person sin?”

I can reason that we are all responsible for Christ’s death because of our sinfulness, but really, what about the person who put the nails into Jesus, or Pilate, or the others? How do I explain this to a ten year old (and to myself)?
