I was responding to the assertion that “the Holy Spirit picks the right man for the times.”
Apparently the Holy Spirit felt that “the times” called for a secular, nepotistic, thieving, war-mongering fornicator. Go figure.
The following pope, Pius III, said of a request for a Mass in memory of Alexander VI; “It is blasphemous to pray for the damned.” High praise indeed from the Holy Father regarding his predecessor.
Perhaps Pius III thought that the Holy Spirit placed “the damned” on the Chair of Peter for good reason, if so it would be helpful to know what that reason would be. Perhaps you could enlighten me?

Did not Jesus choose Paul? A murderer, a persecutor, a maker of martyrs?
Did not Jesus choose Matthew? A cheat and a tax collector?
Who are you to question God’s ways? If He chooses a righteous man or a sinful man, why should it be justified to you? Do you need to understand His every purpose? Or would you be satisfied to simply take God at His word?
“And the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.”
Thousands of reasons could be given, and many of them would probably be valid, but would any of them make you believe? If so, please say, and possible reasons will be given.

Yeah we have some of the same problems as non-Catholics when they have guys like Swaggert and the Bakkers. And of course they don’t count because they aren’t Catholics.
What do you care if one of our popes thought that another was damned? Isn’t there someone out there that isn’t “saved” that you need to be off “witnessing” to?
E.A. I think you’re just taking cheap shots…
BTW there is no reason for the pope to make his own case since so far as Catholics are concerned the case is already made in the Word of God which, according to the general proponents of Sola Scriptura should be quite enough.
Theology isn’t what makes Christianity work, since 1st Corinthians 8:1 says, " Now concerning those things that are sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up; but charity edifieth." (Emphasis mine).Also 1st Corinthians 13:2 says, “And if I should have prophecy and should know all mysteries, and all knowledge, and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.” I see a lot of folks with much knowlege, but I find that in my own life that is nowhere near as important as the spiritual relationship that I have with the Most High. Knowlege is nice, but when it gets down to being the man God wants me to be, it’s not as useful as really loving the people around me.

Perhaps by having a Pope so corrupt it served to put the Church back in the right direction.
