Did you enjoy watching MTV during the 1981-85 period?

I voted yes, but I didn’t watch regularly or for very long at any one sitting.

Well, did any CAF members like Martha Quinn during the 1981-85 period?

During the '81-'85 period, I had no clue she existed.

The only reason I know her name now is because she’s one of the DJ’s on Radio XM 80’s on 8 channel. 😛

(edit— it looks like she’s not with them anymore. I hadn’t noticed. Which shows how much I pay attention.) 😛

I did not have cable tv back then.

My family in New Jersey did, so I’d watch there. We would visit once or twice a year. I don’t remember the VJ’s.

Some towns around me had cable. Some did not.
My parents weren’t about to shell out the big bucks for a passing fad.

However, my BFF at the time came from a family of early adopters, and it was the coolest thing ever for a bunch of us to sleep over her house and watch music videos all night.

However, the earliest videos were nothing to write home about because for about the first year, they tended to be lesser-known bands, rather than the Top 40.

Yeah…and a lot of that music they didn’t play on mainstream radio. But thanks to youtube this music is now super popular .

I used to watch videos on broadcast tv shows that were on late at night on Fridays and weekends. MTV clearly changed the game but I experienced second or third hand.

It is a strange thing, but I’m hearing more and more early and mid 80s pop these days. I walk into a grocery store and feel like I stepped into a time machine back to when I was 15.

We got it in the spring of 83. I rushed home from school the day they hooked it up. First video I ever saw was Separate Ways by Journey.

Probably, because that Synth-pop New Wave has such a distinctive sound that old and young both like it.If you read the comments from young people on youtube they all say that the music was better back in the day.

Sure, I remember Martha Quinn. Also “Downtown” Julie Brown.

Anyone remember “Night Trax?” I used to work the closing shift at Taco Bell, then come home and watch some videos.

Also, there was Night Flight a TV show that played music videos.

While I wasn’t alive then, I can only assume that this was the period when MTV was actually about music and played music videos. So I can definitely say that I would’ve found it much more bearable than the current MTV.
