Did you hear Joel Osteen/Pentecostal pastor make fun of the Catholic Baptism?

As I passed by the family room I caught Mr Osteen in his Sunday televised show telling an anecdote of a Catholic priest telling a just baptized farmer"you were a baptist and now you have become a Catholic"(I don’t remember the exact words).Then he said the farmer went to his barn,sprinkle his cow and other animals and told them"you were a cow, a pig and a chicken,now you are all fish"Mr Olsteen’s huge audience broke laughing.
I asked myself why did he had to poke fun at us.I had thought he was uplifting,now
I do not like him.I had not set the TV to his program,but in the past I listened to him a couple of times.He was inspirational .Now I see he also has hidden agendas.:mad:
 
He is a fraud and he misleads people. I am not surprised he said this in the least. Yes - he has an agenda, to fill his pockets with other people’s money.

The laughter is because they believe salvation comes from faith of the new saint, not from a third party proclaiming you are now a Christian because a baptismal ceremony was held. They believe the baptism is symbolic.

The third party, the Priest in Pastor Osteen’s story, has proclaimed someone else a Catholic. The analogy is made by the farmer proclaiming his dog is a cat because a ceremony was held and not the cat living the life as a dog. They would probably have a big a laugh at declaring someone is Muslim because their father was

I share your disappointment. I used to like him and respected his preaching ability, but what he said is basically a wager that his audience does not read the Bible.

The Bible says that baptism is what makes someone a member of the Body of Christ.

Wow. I had no idea that Joel Osteen was anti-Catholic. That’s sad. 😦 He was one of the very few televangelists that I actually used to have a little respect for, no longer.

**Pray for our protestant brothers & sisters who truly love Jesus, but are so often misled by incorrect personal interpretations of Sacred Scripture by these pastors.

As usual, these self-proclaimed “Bible alone” protestant ministers only have it partially correct. They ignore the words of Jesus in the Bible if they do not support their false assumptions, as well as ignoring the teachings of His One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church!

Jesus said, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” (MK 16:16)

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC);

“Baptism makes us members of the Body of Christ: “Therefore . . . we are members one of another.” Baptism incorporates us into the Church. From the baptismal fonts is born the one People of God of the New Covenant, which transcends all the natural or human limits of nations, cultures, races, and sexes: “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body”. (1 Cor 12:13)” (CCC 1267)

Osteen is a feel-good motivational speaker, and certainly not representative of evangelical Christians. In fact, many evangelicals feel he is heterodox.
 
They just think everything is symbolic. Quoting Bible verses to him is useless, because he has interpreted the Bible to mean something totally different. To him you are supposed to take things literally, but only when it suits you. The rest of the time you can pretend that communion and baptism are symbols.

His is like Tony Robbins in many of the things he states. I just take what he says and use the things that apply to me. He is not saying to do things the way he states or you will go to hell. Now is that ‘Christian light’? I guess some people could say that. But again I don’t belong to his church and you are only seeing a part of what actually happens in his church anyway.
 
One day while channel surfing, I caught one of those grandiose southern preachers berating Catholics and their receiving of the Eucharist.

Congregation laughed. Did they not know the service would be on national television?

I thought more of him, until that.

What a sad group identity as Christians.

It doesn’t disturb you in the slightest that Olsteen says he is a Biblical minister and yet he is bashing a Biblical practice?

That’s one way to look at it, the other is that he is “bashing” the interpretation of what happens after a ritual is performed. Its kind of odd to bash baptisms when his church doesn’t wait until Resurrection Sunday and has believers baptisms on a weekly basis

Most Catholic churches have weekly baptisms. The evening before Pascha (as Resurrection Sunday is known in the non-English-speaking world) is just a more solemn occasion.

Of course, the Catholic Church holds that faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit and not an intellectual assent. Hence, infants, who are not capable of intellectual assent, may be baptized.

Go one YouTube or his website and actually listen to what was said before you judge.

Here is the joke he said:

*A Baptist lived in a neighborhood that was filled with Catholics. On Fridays, this man likes to barbecue steak on the grill in his backyard. The neighbors didn’t like this because they could eat only fish on Fridays. The neighbors worked real hard over the next few months to convert him to be a Catholic. It worked and the man was baptized. During his Baptism, the priest sprinkled water over him and said “You were born a Baptist, you were raised a Baptist, and now you are Catholic.”

The next Friday everyone to their surprise could smell a steak being cooked on the barbecue. The man was sprinkling salt over the steak, saying “You were born a cow, you were raised a cow, now you are a fish.”*

It is a joke. It is not anti-Catholicism.

He is NOT bashing Baptism. If you want to over-analyze the joke, it would show that the man in the joke is a hypocrite.
 
It is an interesting discussion; the varying degrees of acceptance and denial concerning two of the seven Sacraments that protestant denominations make use of: baptism and communion.

Apparently, if the Church or other denominations vary from your interpretatian, then you berate them their understanding.
