Which is, by the bye, how*** I***
Asked, " Is the Bible inspired?". he answered, “I don’t know”.

I find that hard to believe. Please provide a link to a transcript, or some other proof for this outrageous charge.

If memory serves it was in responce to a series of questions King threw up trying to get Osteen to say you are going to hell Mr. King. Pastor Osteen isn’t that kind of preacher.

As far as I know it was on Larry King live… I was trying to find it real quick (and I will search again when I got the time), but I found this one that is just as interesting.
Just as a warning: You might want to have your Bible ready to compare what his Bible says with what your Bible says.
This video is taken at his church and he is “preaching”. The person who put it online added a couple of comments to it to show the difference between what J. Osteen is preaching and Scripture.

Video:
Osteen said what?

I haven’t found the video I was looking for, but this one here has parts of it in it. The audio excerpts of Joel Osteen on Larry King live are within this video, though not right at the beginning. This is a slideshow with an audio track that was mixed by a guy who calls himself HipHop. He is mixing a sermon of Paul Washer with a sermon of Joel Osteen and the Larry King interview . The result is this video (which is the 3rd out of a series of 3).
I am posting this mainly for my Protestant friends who are going out of their way to defend Joel Osteen. Brothers and sisters, he is not a preacher and he is not a pastor. He is a motivational speaker who draws crowds every Sunday and makes them feel good. He is not telling them what they need to know and he is leaving them in their sin and encouraging them in their sin. He doesn’t warn them about the judgement to come. This man who calls himself a pastor is indeed a false prophet and he is leading a flock of over 10,000 people astray.

*LARRY KING: What do you think, Joel? First, [is the bible] inspired word.

JOEL OSTEEN: Yes, I believe the bible is god’s inspired word.

KING: You believe in the Bible literally?

OSTEEN: I do, I do.

KING: Noah had an ark and Adam and Eve?

OSTEEN: I do. I do. I believe that. I believe it all.

**Asked, “Are you a Christian?”, he answered, “I don’t know”.

*CALLER: …thank you, Joel – for your positive messages and your book. I’m wondering, though, why you side-stepped Larry’s earlier question about how we get to heaven? The bible clearly tells us that Jesus is the way, the truth and the light and the only way to the father is through him. That’s not really a message of condemnation but of truth.

OSTEEN: Yes, I would agree with her. I believe that…
*

**Asked, “Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?”, he answered, “I don’t know”.
**

*KING: Do you share Billy [Graham’s] beliefs of life after death in a sense of going somewhere?

OSTEEN: I do. I do. We probably agree on 99 percent. I do. I believe there’s a heaven you know. Afterwards, there’s, you know, a place called hell. And I believe it’s when we have a relationship with God and his son Jesus and that’s what the Bible teaches us. I believe it.

I’ve only watched Osteen a handful of times. I find his sermons to be a bit on the shallow side. Even so, it’s never good to lie about someone!

Zooey has yet to disclose the sources of the statements you cited; Zooey never said that they came from the LKL interview. Somebody else said that. Hence it is premature for you to be drawing conclusions.

I sent in a message to the Joel Osteen Ministry asking why he would try to divide over a joke but are any of you surprised? This is the problem with the divide in doctine and the thousands of donominations. We can’t even get Catholic on the same page when it is spelled out in BLACK and White in the Catecism and through the teachings of the Church. Pray for the Unity among Catholics, under the beauty and authority of the Church in full Union with the Pope, so that we can be a witness to all the Nations!!!

If you don’t like Joel Osteen, don’t watch him. He is like Norman Vincent Peale was and Robert Schuller is. Positive thinking. True, this is not evangelical theology, but it helps many people get through their crises in life. And his sermons, like those of Peale and Schuller, are delivered within a Christian context. Personally, he doesn’t appeal to me, but obviously he appeals to thousands, even millions of others.
Code:
I would let God judge. There are many differences among Catholics - even priests - as among Protestants. Personally, I don't believe we will be measured by our orthodox theology, but more so by whether we (1) love God and (2) love one another. When did we see you hungry and fed you, in prison and visited you....? When you do it unto one of these...you have done it unto me.

Could it be that we don't know as much as God does? Then, why play God?.

That would be all nice and dandy if he would actually lead people towards God. Instead he is making God out to be something like a celestial Santa Clause that gives you everything you need, if you just think positive. That is not the way it works. Diminishing God to something like that borders on heresy and he is leading people away from Christ with teachings like that.
He doesn’t want to talk about sin because he doesn’t want to be a downer? Christ died on the cross for our sins, not to give people a great life.
If he doesn’t want to talk about the other half of the gospel he should be a motivational speaker and have a theologian take over the Sunday service instead.

I do not recall Norman Vincent Peale telling jokes about the Catholic Church.
Do you?
Osteen mentioning our church by name to make his people laugh was uncalled for, and definitely had nothing to do with motivation.

Paul the evangelist writes…
Tim. 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
3 **For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;**4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

This is similar to the parable of the Sower of the seed where when some people receive the Word of God initially with joy but as soon as persecutions come they depart from it. That is the seed that falls on the rocky ground. T.V. is such a curse. No-one wants to read the Word for themselves. They want someone to tell them how to be saved. St. Paul goes on to write in Philippians 2:12b-13 “work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure”. We cannot sit back as The Good Shephard said Matthew 7,13 *Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. 14 How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it! * Start looking for that way. Jesus is the Truth, the Way and the Life.

T.O.M.

NOPE, at the end of every show he strongly encourages viewers to attend a good local bible based church.
… right after he leads them in the Sinner’s Prayer, hence his definition of a “Bible based” church is one that rejects baptism.

Here is the “We Believe” section from the Osteen web site:

joelosteen.com/About/WhatWeBelieve/Pages/WhatWeBelieve.aspx

It says the opposite of all the claims that have been made here. You can argue with the “symbolic” wording all you want, but I don’t see anything outside of mainstream Christianity there.

I’m still waiting for Zooey to provide a link to support those outrageous charges.

I honestly think some people here need to examine their own hearts. Osteen might not preach the kind of message you’d like to hear, but I don’t see or hear much that is indefensible.

Who wants to sit around and listen to fire and brimstone every Sunday? I don’t. That’s not what a life in and with Jesus is about.

I heard a similarly phrased joke (the farmer and his neighbors), although I don’t think it was so much an anti-Catholic joke as it was more of a red-neck (the farmer) joke.

EDIT: It was a Lenten joke. Here’s the full text for reference (not sure if it’s the same one that pastor said since I didn’t hear it).
A little Lenten Humor:
It’s hard to be a Catholic:
John Smith was the only Protestant to move into a large Catholic
neighborhood. On the first Friday of Lent, John was outside
grilling a big juicy steak on his grill. Meanwhile, all of his neighbors
were eating cold Tuna fish for supper. This went on each Friday of Lent.
On the last Friday of Lent, the neighborhood men got together and
decided that something had to be done about John; he was tempting them to
eat meat each Friday of Lent, and they couldn’t take it anymore.
They decided to try and convert John to be a Catholic. They went
over and talked to him and were so happy that he decided to join all of
his neighbors and become a Catholic. They took him to Church, and the
Priest sprinkled some water over him, and said, “You were born a
Baptist, you were raised a Baptist, and now you are a Catholic.”
The men were so relieved, now their biggest Lenten temptation was
resolved.
The next year’s Lenten season rolled around. The first Friday of
Lent came, and just at supper time, when the neighborhood was setting down
to their cold tuna fish dinner, came the wafting smell of steak cooking on
a grill. The neighborhood men could not believe their noses!
WHAT WAS GOING ON?
They called each other up and decided to meet over in John’s yard
to see if he had forgotten it was the first Friday of Lent. The group
arrived just in time to see John standing over his grill with a small
pitcher of
water. He was sprinkling some water over his steak on the grill, saying,
“You were born a cow, you were raised a cow, and now you are a fish.”
I’m not sure where I heard it before, either another forum on CAF or somewhere else. I thought it was more of a stereotypical-male-joke.

Oh stop making things up CH
There is nothing in his sermons or the sinner’s prayer that rejects baptism

If someone is inspired by his light sermons, they are going to
  • return to their prior church
  • go to a firends church
  • go church shopping

Re 166
Code:
Norman Vincent Peale may never have told a joke re Catholics. However, as I recall, he was a leader in the effort to block JFK's bid for the presidency because JFK was a Catholic. True, not a very good Catholic, and probably the most prolific adulterer ever to occupy the White House.

As for the joke Osteen told, I thought it did more to defame the Baptist convert than Catholicism. As others have pointed out, the convert seemed to be the ridiculous one.

Oh stop making things up CH

The sinner’s prayer by definition rejects the reality of the Sacrament of Baptism. It is an assertion that the sinner’s prayer itself is what saves somebody and makes somebody a Christian. It asserts that baptism, if it exists at all, is an optional and symbolic ordinance. This is unbiblical and dangerous.

It is quite evident that Osteen’s view of baptism is unbiblical:
What We Believe - Osteen:
water baptism is a symbol of the cleansing power of the blood of Christ and a testimony to our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
n.b.: I just explained the reality of Baptism and the fantasy of salvation by faith alone/the sinner’s prayer on another thread.
