As I passed by the family room I caught Mr Osteen in his Sunday televised show telling an anecdote of a Catholic priest telling a just baptized farmer"you were a baptist and now you have become a Catholic"(I don’t remember the exact words). Then he said the farmer went to his barn, sprinkle his cow and other animals and told them"you were a cow, a pig and a chicken, now you are all fish"Mr Olsteen’s huge audience broke laughing.
I asked myself why did he had to poke fun at us.I had thought he was uplifting, now
I do not like him.I had not set the TV to his program, but in the past I listened to him a couple of times. He was inspirational .Now I see he also has hidden agendas.
Osteen likes to make a joke at the beginning of all of his sermons.

I remember a joke that went like this:
A Jewish man moved into a Catholic neighborhood, now every Friday of Lent, the Jewish man had a big BBQ outside of his house and his neighboring Catholics would get annoyed because they smelled the delicious BBQ but couldn’t join. So the converted him and took him to a priest. At baptism the priest said, “You were born a Jew, raised a Jew, now a Catholic.” The following Friday the now Catholic man had a BBQ at his house. His neighbors went to remind him that he was now Catholic and couldn’t have any meat during lent. But right before they could get a word out the man takes out water and sprinkles the steak saying, “You were born a cow, raised a cow, now a fish.”

I imagine he was saying that joke but instead of Jewish he made it a farmer. I’d be really surprised that he said something bashing Catholics, especially on his show. The guy can’t say anything bad about Mormonism or make the proper case to become a Christian.

I don’t like Osteen, but I think you took it out of context.

Osteen is the one that says that if you become a Christian you’ll have no troubles for the rest of your life, right?

I honestly think some people here need to examine their own hearts. Osteen might not preach the kind of message you’d like to hear, but I don’t see or hear much that is indefensible.
The sinner’s prayer is biblically indefensible. It’s bad enough on its own; adding a joke that relegates baptism to a punchline only rubs salt in the wound.
Who wants to sit around and listen to fire and brimstone every Sunday? I don’t. That’s not what a life in and with Jesus is about.
The Catholic Church does not preach fire and brimstone, so can I buy that straw man from you to protect my garden? 🙂

The sinner’s prayer does not teach against baptism. Learning about baptism comes later as the new believer learns more. It’s a learning process. e.g. When you are telling someone new about Jesus, do you start with transubstantiation?

A sincere sinner’s prayer saves instantly. You disagree? That is, let’s say:
  1. A non-believer is watching Osteen on TV
  2. Upon hearing Osteen’s message, the non-believer is drawn to Jesus by the Holy Spirit
  3. The non-believer sincerely repents and asks for forgiveness by reciting the prayer along with Osteen.
  4. The new believer immediately dies before being baptized or doing any good works.
**You think that person is going to hell?
**

And sorry, I must have missed the baptism joke. Where is it?

You are really stretching there. That was in reference to other protestants who don’t like his “positive message” style of preaching.

I cannot agree that a particular incantation causes salvation.

However, perfect contrition can save.

I don’t think Osteen would claim an incantation would either. I certainly wouldn’t.
Are you contending that it is impossible for someone to experience perfect contrition in the course of a Joel Osteen sermon? Do you doubt that it happens?

If not, then I don’t understand what all the hand-waving is about.

Perfect contrition is not an alternate means to be saved besides baptism and repentance. It is there for people who do not have access to either. Immediately after the SP Osteen declares the person saved. This presupposes all of the above. If Osteen was honest he would say:

“Okay, do you feel the contrition in your heart, your sorrow for your sins? Well, we believe this is NOT enough to save you. You must now be baptized according to the Great Commission. If you were already baptized, you must go to a priest and confess your sins. But, if something were to happen to you tonight, THEN you will be saved IF your contrition is sincere and for love of God.”

Instead, he says:

“We believe you just got saved!”

Would Jesus or the Holy Spirit like the joke of baptizing a barbecue steak? Yes or not. That is the real test for us Christians.Be loyal to your faith!

For other non-Christians posters it is reasonable that they would not understand.

So if we say “yes, Jesus would like it”, then we fail the test?

Did you ask Jesus about his opinion on this? Did he give you an answer?

Do you make jokes also about the muslin religion in public, for example?or you are more careful and “sensitive”?
Be truthful now.

Meh, he is part of the “name it and claim it” (also called Word of Faith Pentacostalism) prosperity gospel pseudo-preachers that begain with Oral Roberts and is currently advocated by the likes of Creflo Dollar (appropraitely named), Kenneth Hagan, Kenneth Copeland, Benny Hinn, T.D. Jakes, et al… Nothing to see, just move along.

Go one YouTube or his website and actually listen to what was said before you judge.

Here is the joke he said:

*A Baptist lived in a neighborhood that was filled with Catholics. On Fridays, this man likes to barbecue steak on the grill in his backyard. The neighbors didn’t like this because they could eat only fish on Fridays. The neighbors worked real hard over the next few months to convert him to be a Catholic. It worked and the man was baptized. During his Baptism, the priest sprinkled water over him and said “You were born a Baptist, you were raised a Baptist, and now you are Catholic.” *

The next Friday everyone to their surprise could smell a steak being cooked on the barbecue. The man was sprinkling salt over the steak, saying “You were born a cow, you were raised a cow, now you are a fish.”

It is a joke. It is not anti-Catholicism.
Demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the Catholic faith. No priest would ever 're-baptize" a proper baptism on a former Baptist. One baptism for the forgiveness of sins. His Baptist baptism was sufficient for the Catholic Church. The only “Christian”(I put in quotation marks because they consider themselves Christian, but have severe Christological/Pneumological/Patrological errors in their theology) baptisms that are considered invalid are Jehovah’s Witness, Mormon, and certain “Oneness Pentacostal” baptisms.

He is also very specific that none of his jokes are meant to be correct in doctrine

Bumping this thead for Zooey, who appears to be back

Zooey, please provide a source for your quotes. Many of us think they are false statements
Asked, " Is the Bible inspired?". he answered, “I don’t know”.
Asked, “Are you a Christian?”, he answered, “I don’t know”.
Asked, “Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?”, he answered, “I don’t know”.

Sadly, many fundamentalist protestant denominations villify the Roman Catholic Church.

I grew up with the Free Methodist Church (which is NOTHING like the regular Methodists). My maternal grandfather was Pastor of a Church, and he preached Camp Meetings during the summer. My elder sister, brother and I spent all summer long with my Papa and Grandma.

I was taught in Sunday School that the Pope was the Devil Incarnate on earth. I was taught that all Nuns were “Brides of the Devil”, and that the reason they wore the “strange clothing” was to hide their horns and tails (this was pre-Vatican II). We had supposed former Priests and Nuns that came around, telling us how every Nun was required to have a baby fathered by a Priest, and that those babies were sacrificed during “Black Masses”.

This was in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.

Imagine my horror, when at the age of 9, my mother placed my in a Catholic Boarding School! I was terrified, I literally believed that she was turning me over to the devil (my mother practiced no religion at all, by the way). My mother just picked the cheapest boarding school she could find.

The Nuns, and staff, were so kind, so loving, that in less than 3 months, I was asking to be baptized. They would not do it for such a young person, but I was finally baptized at the age of 13.

There is still a great deal of prejudice against Catholics in many Protestant Denominations. You would be amazed at some of the pure “crud” that is taught, and of the virtually total ignorance about what Catholics actually believe.

Probably the most common belief is that we all worship Mary and other Saints. They truly believe that we consider Mary, and the Saints, to be equals of God.

By the way, the joke about baptizing a cow, sheep, etc. is very, very old. I first heard it over 50 years ago.

Why does everybody emphasize that the joke is old? Does it make any difference.?

PleeD:

That is not a fair answer. You know I cannot ask Jesus .But from what I learned from the bible, I can assume with certainty that Jesus( or John the Baptist either) would not appreciate your joking about a soul saving sacrament.Again I ask you,do you think they would laugh at it?
