How many know today is a day of penance? I was just reading my *Magnificat *today, and it says:

“In all the dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life.”

I’ve been a member of three different Catholics parishes and have never heard this announced, and I don’t recall ever hearing this from any pro-life source. Have any of you had this announced at your parish?

This is the first time, I’ve heard about it. It makes sense, but does that mean abstinance and/or fasting ???

On my Mary and the Saints calendar it says a day of penance for the sin of abortion.

I also saw the day of penance in my Magnificat.

No - it can simply mean additional prayer. I said the Rosary for the success of the pro-life activities going on, and went to Mass.

Probably because this is the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the case by which the Supreme Court “found” the “right” to abortion to be protected by the United States Constitution.

:nods: exactly.

It was not mentioned at my local Church, but I read about it in a datebook from TAN. I already fast and abstain on all Mondays, so not sure what to do extra.
