"Did you not know I would be in My Father's house?" unclear

Jesus asked this in Luke 2:49 to his Mom and St. Joseph. They didn’t understand Him. HOW COULD THEY NOT UNDERSTAND HIM!!! Surely they knew God was his Dad. I mean, Mary definitely did, St. Joseph learned. They knew that this Child was the Son of God. How could they not know what he was saying? His Father dwelled in the temple.

How could they not understand him? What didn’t they understand?

It means the same, what are we drawn towards, seeking the face of God, so same difference for what it’s worth…

Ver. 49. I must be about the things that are my Father’s? By these words he shewed, that not St. Joseph, but only God, was his father. (Witham)

Ver. 50. They understood not, &c. That is, knew not when, or by what means, Christ designed to make himself known to the world. (Witham)

But, still, this doesn’t answer how did they not understand this.

They knew who He was, at least that He was from God. What didn’t they understand? Why would they have a hard time comprehending what He had stated?

Mary said yes to God, She explained the situation to St. Joseph, Elizabeth stated that her Cousin was, “the Mother of my Lord,”…they KNEW He was God, what’s with the disconnect?

They knew who He was, at least that He was from God. **What didn’t they understand? **Why would they have a hard time comprehending what He had stated?

The issue, I think, is about misunderstanding what they didn’t understand. The issue was not about questioning His Divinity, but rather what was Jesus doing.
The texts says, “did you not know I was going about my Father’s business?” In otherwords, the parents were stunned because their 12 year old basically ran away and ‘got lost’, only to find out He had more important things to do. Knowing He was from God does not mean they couldn’t be stunned at how He was to be revealed. After all, who knows how the Son of God, especially as a baby, is supposed to act? You’d be amazed every day.

And the reference to “my Father,” Jesus is revealing to all that God is His real Father, and He takes precedence (and thus was not disobeying his parents when he ran off).
