Did anyone see Fr. Richard McBrien on the “Resurection” special on Friday night, 20 May? If so, did anyone think he overtly denied the physical resurection? He said something to the affect that if you had taken a photo of Jesus standing with Peter and Mary (I think that was who it was), the only people who would have appeared in the photo would have been Peter and Mary. Anyone see him?

I did see him and I thought I misheard him when he said that, but he did.

I took it as a denial of the physical resurrection.

Jesus’es body after the resurrection was a glorified body. Different in a number of ways from his original. Has anyone ever photographed a glorified body? Maybe it can’t be done. That said, I think McBrien, who is fairly sharp as a sociologist is often full of baloney as a theologian. He certainly is a poor representative of the Catholic or even Protestant mainstream.

But the entire point of the Gospels and the epistle in which Paul describes those that “handled” Christ was the physical nature of the Resurection (ate a piece of fish, invited Thomas to touch Him, etc.). And they grouped Father McBrien with the lot who didn’t believe in a spiritual resurection, though they did not deny that something happened.

I have no arguements with the eating etc. Scripture includes those actions to indicate that indeed he had risen, however people with a “normal” body do not just materialize in a closed room, etc. There is no evidence whatsoever that one could photograph Him. Maybe his radiance would fog the film. Who knows? Who cares? McBrian is full of himself.

I know. I was thinking of ordering a tape and sending it to Pope Benedict, though. I just wanted to make sure I hadn’t misunderstood the man.

The Pope has 1,000,000,000 + Catholics to contend with. You might try sending it to Lavada, who is taking over the post.

Yes it was him…I was very disappointed by his comment…though not surprised given his liberal thinking…

Wasn’t he on the da Vinci code special also?

And Elizabeth Vargas (correct me if I’m wrong) also presents herself as a Catholic.

I can understand that she needs to present a well rounded story, but when Catholics get peppered into the edit alongside very non-Catholic viewpoints, it only confuses Catholics that are not clear on Catholic teaching.

I think we already have plenty of unclear teachings by so-called Catholics. Way to go, Vargas.

I think he’s very adept at skirting heresy. One could argue that just as Jesus’ glorified body could pass through walls, somehow the photographic negative would fail to register his physical presence and that his statement is speculation regarding the properties of the resurrected body. Of course the Shroud of Turin is awfully close to a negative of Jesus resurrected body, possibly the first photographic negative in history. Wonder what McBrien would say to that? I just turn the channel anytime I see him on TV. Though I did have to switch back when Cardinal Ratzinger was announced as the new pope, just to hear his stuttering reaction. 😛

Excellent point!

Well, I meant “send it to the Holy See.” But marked “to the attention of HE Archbishop Levada” would probably be best.

Agreed. Laveda is probabaly for familiar with McBrien’s antics that Pope Benedict would be.
