I was watching the opening mass for WYD in Madrid. It is absolutely beautiful. There are a few very striking points that I would like people to observe, if they can watch it live or when they replay it.
  1. It uses the Ordinary Form
  2. Most of the mass is in Spanish.
  3. It is done with precision as the rubrics for the OF dictate.
  4. I believe it is the first time that the votive mass for Bl. John Paul II is being used in public. The prayers were beautifully written.
  5. It is absolutely beautiful in its austerity and in its solemnity.
The only weakness that I saw with it is the position of the sanctuary. It’s on the east side facing west. It seems that no one thought about the fact that the sun sets in the west. Being an evening mass, the sun is driving the concelebrants crazy. They are using white umbrellas to help them see. The umbrellas are annoying. Of well, that’s a minor detail.

Sounds wonderful! I have several friends who are over there right now.

What kind of music did they use during the Mass?

It’s actually on right now. The music is a blend of classical hymns, as in the oldies but goodies 😃 and classical Spanish hymns, many from the Carmelite Tradition, which has a very unique wording and musical style.

I find it very pretty, because it’s very Mooresque, which is not commonly heard outside of Span and the Middle East. This is very appropriate given that they are welcoming the world youth to Spain and Teresa is one of the patrons of Spain, along with St. James. Then they slip some Franciscan chant in there, which is different from Gregorian chant. All of us know it, but just don’t know that it’s Franciscan. It’s the chant that we use when we chant the Lord’s Prayer and the doxology. It’s very bland, just enough to comply with the requirement to chant, but not too much so as not to violate the rules of Saints Francis and Clare.

We have to remember that Spain has a long history of blending Eastern, Franciscan and Carmelite spirituality into their liturgy. The other great influence in Spanish Cathlicisim is Jesuit, but they did not dabble in liturgy as did the Carmelites, Franciscans and the Mozarabic.

What I find that I like very much, besides the use of their Spanish tradition, is that they have the correct translation of the missal. Whoever did the translation from Latin to Spanish, for the Spanish Catholic Conference, did an excellent job.

WYD ? On a trad board ?

Are you trolling Brother ?
😛

Seriously though, I think it’s a good thing. A lot of youngsters look forward to it. It’s good they have their own event. 🙂

Ahhh, but you see my brother, youth ministry is very much a part of Catholic tradition. It dates back to St. Benedict in the 6th century. He actually started it. Many people don’t know this little detail about Benedict. That’s why the Benedictines, to this day, run schools out of their abbeys.

It is later picked up by other great men and women:

John Baptist de La Salle
Francis de Sales
John Bosco
Bl. William Chaminade
Frances Xavier Cabrini
Katherine Drexel
Rose Duquesne

and in our day, it is finally picked up by Bl. John Paul II long before he was pope.

It’s food for all of us to know the many rich traditions that make up the Catholic Tradition.

The Mass video is on the WYD site now

madrid11.com/en

EDIT : well, now the video won’t run
That was fast. It just finished 10 minutes ago.

I have to run. We have evening prayer, holy hour, community meal and then a class.

Later folks!

Nothing unusual here. Of course they use the OF. The kids more than likely wouldn’t recognize anything else,
Madrid, Spanish, the vernacular of course, a no brainer. We know that everyone is Spain speaks Spanish.👍 But wait, what about those who speak Catalan? Or Basque,or Galician and Aranese? Or the thousands attending who don’t speak Spanish at all Just hyorrible.:tsktsk: Effectively frozen out listening to the Priest speak in a language they don’t understand. Horrible.
Precision rubrics of course. They are on stage for the whole world to see. The closing Mass will undoubtedly be the same. A truer view will be to see some of the Masses throughout the event as WYD Masses have historically, even traditionally, been rife with abuses.
While the Votive Mass for John Paul II may be beautiful, why was it used here? Is there some significance?
Austerity. Why is that important or even relevent? When did God become so irrelevent and unimportant that we as humans cannot offer Him our best? Why have we started to adopt the cold sterile worship called for by Zwingli back in the day.I also wonder why they would face west rather than east since historically the celebrants faced east. Oh wait, that was an old time thing. :eek:No longer relevent at all.

My sincere apologies.

Hmmmm…The OP of this thread appears to be posted incorrectly, as this subject has nothing to do with the Traditional Catholic section that it is currently posted in.

Some posters will post things on this forum, that most who identify themselves as traditionalists disagree with, just to cause dissension. WYD is one of those things. Another very popular type of post defends the Charismatic Renewal Movement, Very few Traditionalists would be caught dead at either of these type of events. WYD in particular often tends to lean towards ards the charismatic side of things with all of the abuses that typically come with that.

The Mass for JPII was used because he started the WYD in 1985. Also they had a relic of him present.

Maybe the point is that the Pope chose an OF to make a point. And that some of us shouldn’t get too excited about UE. 😦

I don’t want to speak for our brother cause I know he always means well. This may be seen as proof that our Pope is not inclined towards the EF as some speculate.

The OF is just the Mass that is currently used at WYD. I don’t believe the Pope is trying to make a point out of it against the UE.

I’m amazed at some of you who missed the purpose of the thread:
It’s food for all of us to know the many rich traditions that make up the Catholic Tradition.
Instead people decided to essentially saying that Brother JR is trolling, which if you bothered to read any of his posts (including these) you would see that he is anything but a troll.

Some of responses certainly doesn’t shine and favorable light on traditionalists (except At Trent, who ironically joked about trolling yet then proceeded to actually add something to the conversation).

Right, so since it always uses the ordinary form, then what is the point?

I thought the Mass was done very well. I may lean toward the traditional side, but I love WYD. It makes me proud to be Catholic, I’m proud of the event, and most of all I’m proud of the youth.

No one is going to be able to rain on my parade.

Very beautiful, very inspiring. 👍

If I had to have a criticism, it would be a very personal one. All those flowers around the Alter would have been murder on my allergies. :tissues:

The Kyrie is beautiful.

One of the readings is in French?

The Holy Father himself does not have to be inclined to celebrate the EF. That’s not what Summorum Pontificum or UE are saying. What they say is that any diocesan priest can celebrate the EF. He’s not committing to celebrating it himself. However, this does not mean that he does not appreciate it. He doesn’t celebrate any of the other forms or rites. He actually can do so.
Right, so since it always uses the ordinary form, then what is the point?
The point of the two documents, as I explained above, was to make it clear that any diocesan priest could celebrate the EF and any regular priest could do so with the permission of his superior. It was never a commitment to turn toward a full use of the Tridentine Form. SP is clear that the current form is the Ordinary Form and it has the place of prominence in the Latin Church.
The Mass for JPII was used because he started the WYD in 1985. Also they had a relic of him present.
I found out later that the reason is that Pope Benedict has made him Patron of Youth and World Youth Day. That’s the reason to bring the relic from the Vatican and to use the votive mass ahead of schedule. It was not scheduled to be celebrated until October 22 in the Diocese or Rome, in all the dioceses of Poland and several dioceses in the USA that have asked for permission to do so. They seem to be dioceses with heaven concentration of Polish Catholics.

No, what I mean by what is the point, since WYD is celebrated in the OF anyway, why did you list it as below:

Was it to show a reverent ordinary form mass?

Edited: Never mind. You responded in post 21. 🙂
