Did Your Parish Celebrate Respect Life Sunday?

Thank God for the pastor of my parish … the pro-life sermon was excellent! :clapping: :cool: :tiphat:

I think a former pastor of mine, Fr. Joseph Costello, who has since died, may God rest his soul with a heavenly reward, gave the best pro-life sermon I ever heard. That still may stand, though today’s sermon comes real close.

How about in other parishes?

We had a great sermon. Our parish also had a three hour time period to stand at a peaceful vigil outside of an abortion clinic.

Sadly, nothing. I mentioned it to DH afterward, and he was like, “What? That was today?” 😦 In our old diocese it was a BIG deal, we did the life chain every year, extra prayer vigils at the abortuary, lots of attention. Here…not so much. 😦

Nothing. I wasn’t even aware that it was “Respect Life Sunday”. Abortion doesn’t get much attention in this town because the only hospital doesn’t do them. It’s not really on anyone’s radar unless they want one and then they must spend the necessary money to fly out to get one.
 
We most certainly did.

Our bishop (Joseph Martino, Diocese of Scranton) wrote a pastoral letter for Respect Life Sunday that, at his direction, was read in place of the homily at every weekend Mass of obligation. Furthermore, nine of the ten petitions at the Prayers of the Faithful were life-related.
 
It would have been hard for Monsignor to have been any clearer – abortion is an intrinsic evil and anyone who supports an intrinsic evil by any of their actions, shares in the sin of that intrinsic evil.
 
Our deacon gave a wonderful homily on being Pro-Life … talked about abortion … how the vineyard in today’s gospel is life … that we are the caretakers but God is the owner … He instructed us all on our calling to be a voice and a help in providing alternatives … one page in the bulletin was used to provide a list of resources … and he mentioned them in his homily …

Our Intentions were focused on life issues …

The Respect Life Corner of the bulletin was expanded … had a notice of our upcoming Pro-Life Mass on Octber 22nd … our vicariate parishes try to host a special mass or evening of prayer every quarter on or near the 22nd of the month … Also in th ecorner was a plug for Forty Days for Life … an upcoming movie night on Oct 19th showing of “Bella” and our Respect Life Committee hosted coffee and refreshments after the 3 morning masses … the free will donation for the treats will be donated 👍 to clinic that offers medical care, parenting classes and alternatives to abortion … it was damaged in an arson fire bombing about 2 weeks ago :mad: … they we are sure they also need financial assistance to get back up and running …

So yes, Repsect Life Sunday in my parish was a success … 😃
 
Being a Catholic College student, Respect Life Sunday happens every day of the year, but yes we did have a pro-life homily today. I don’t know that it was ever stated that it was Respect Life Sunday, but like I said, on a campus where Abortion Clinic Outreach is a weekly event, today wasn’t much different
 
Most definately…and Father gave a very good pro-life homily, speaking completely from the heart, no notes, that abortion, contraception and gay marriage are wrong and that we as a nation should be trying to fix these problems. I’m afraid he might have ticked a couple of people off, but he was great.

Oh and Bishop Olmstead had a DVD video for the whole diocese to show about Sanctity of Life Sunday.
 
We went to a neighboring parish where a good friend of ours is the pastor. He gave one of his always-magnificent homilies, and talked about the Life Chain, which is a big deal here. He was going to participate, with a good contingent from the parish. Our home parish is also very supportive. It is given prominent play in the Catholic newspaper, in bulletins, from the pulpit, etc. We are fortunate.
 
We got a great sermon today on pro-life. He discussed how important our vote is and how we as Catholics need to to speak up and be heard. He talked about our duty to vote for what our faith teaches us. He also spoke about some bills that are coming up on pro-choice and euthanasia that are very important that they do not pass.

We also heard about how we can help during the 40 days of Pro-life during this month and next.

I was so pleased to hear this homily. I thought it was about time we heard this in our church on Sunday.

We had it listed in our bulletin, said a payer after the rosary was given and offered an intention in prayer after the creed.
 
Our pastor gave a great sermon on life issues. We had a baby shower for Caring Choices and the Hope Clinic which serve women with problem pregnancys. Diapers, blankets, onesies, etc. filled the narthex. Also the Bishops statement on forming a catholic conscience in this election year was included as an insert in our bulletin. I hope every Catholic voter has access to this document and reads it carefully. 40 Million dead babies trumps everything else.
 
We had a nice, pro-life homily. In addition, Cardinal Maida mandated that all parishes in the Archdiocese mention the State Proposition to allow Embyronic Stem Cell research in Michigan ( currently prohibited by law). So that pastor discussed that, and the need to defeat that proposition.

The parish also had a LifeChain event, where we stood with signs, in quiet prayer along a major street, calling attention to the tragety of abortion.
 
We had a very good pro-life homily by the new transitional deacon; the entire Mass had the Respect Life theme. I thought the homily particularly good because his focus was on everyone doing what was right, whether or not it was convenient, on everyone supporting life in both word and action, and not just in word alone. It was challenging and compassionate at the same time.
 
My husband and I were at all the masses distributing the Bishops’ voting guide. The pastor mentioned Respect Life Sunday in his homily but emphasized that it is more than just abortion it also includes the topic of war.

Many parishioners responded positively but others felt that our presence there was “totally inappropriate”. Others turned their heads when I asked them to please vote pro-life.

All in all though it was a very positive and fruitful weekend.
 
It was mentioned during the Prayers of the Faithful and the announcements after Communion.

The sermon was on the vinyard theme of the First Reading and the Gospel.

Heaven forbid that we vote based on our religious beliefs…:rolleyes:
 
I hear my old parish (still my parish of record, unfortunately) didn’t, but my new parish was the starting point for the local Life Chain, so it was well-advertised and we all attended except the Marine.
