I went to confession yesterday… Of course, I am not doubting God’s mercy, I’m just wondering if the priest really did absolve me. So here’s what happened…
  • I did say my sins
  • I listened to his advice. A beautiful advice.
  • I think I really received the absolution because I remember well that he said a prayer (which was hard to listen because of his way of pronouncing, (probably he came from a province here in the Philippines) right after the advice.
  • After saying the prayer, at the end of it it’s vivid on my mind that I did the sign of the cross.
Points here:
  1. If the priest were not to absolve you, he would say something like "Sorry son, I cannot absolve you right now, come back again tomorrow."
  2. The priest didn’t grant me penance, so I asked for it, and he told me to be humble and seek help from our Mother, and I think he also said something other than that.
Answer to the points:
  1. I never heard the priest said that to me.
  2. If I asked my confessor "Father, what’s my penance?" and I only asked for my penance and never my absolution, therefore, I was absolved. Why would I ask for something that I did already receive, right?
    • After I asked for my penance, of course he told me what to do. And let’s say he didn’t grant be absolution, then I asked for penance, he would not give it to me, right?
Please bear with my questioning mind… maybe scrupulous… thanks!

Very rarely do priests actually refuse absolution, and I’m sure that one who did would make sure the penitent understood that (and why, and what needed to happen for absolution to be granted in the future) before he or she left the confessional.

Yes this is less than rational scrupulosity.
Why ask anonymous amateurs who will end up offering you contradictory advice, just go back to Confession if it continues to compulsively bother you.
CAF cannot solve your issues, they are emotional not intellectual.
Get a spiritual director and follow his advice and no other.
