I went to confession yesterday before a Latin Mass. I’d never gone to confession during this Mass before, opting for my regular parish priest. This priest gave me absolution in Latin, but when he gave me my penance, I didn’t understand him very well – he has a thick accent, French, I believe. I feel stupid now, but at the time I was nervous to begin with. I know I should have said something, but didn’t. All I recall hearing from him is “recite miscor…(something) Blessed Virgin.” I feel horrible now. Does anyone have a clue what he might have meant with that “miscor…” Misericordia?

Of course if this ever happens again you know that you should clarify with the priest while you’re still there.

But could he have said “Memorare”?

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

Or perhaps referred to Psalm 51 as the Miserere though that doesn’t have anything to do with Mary.

Thank you. I believe it was the Memorare, as it seems to fit and make sense in the context of what was said. I won’t allow that to happen again. And I will pray the Memorare, AND the Rosary, AND Psalm 51.

You are not alone.
We have two priests that serve two parishes. One is American and the other African. Not only is it extremely difficult for me to understand the latter in confession but also when he gives the homily at mass. Of course I cannot choose which mass I attend but I make it a point to have my confession heard by the priest I can understand.
This past Sunday our American priest visited with the alumni at his seminary and the African priest went home for a short visit. The diocese provided an Indian priest and his accent made it almost impossible for me to understand a word he said. But then I attend mass so that I might share in the presense of Christ and his bodily gift of communion.
When growing up it was always the Latin Mass. Many of our traditions have changed but I am an old timer and love to attend, when possible, traditional masses said in Latin. I also refuse to take communion in my hand but on my tongue. Yep, an old timer who went to Catholic Schools and taught by nuns.👍

More than likely he was reciting the indulgences prayer that’s in the former rite.
Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi, merita Beatae Mariae Virginis et omnium sanctorum, quidquid boni feceris vel mail sustinueris sint tibi in remissionem peccatorum, augmentum gratiae et praemium vitae aeternae.
May the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the merits of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of all the saints and also whatever good you do or evil you endure merit for you the remission of your sins, the increase of grace and the reward of everlasting life. Amen.
