What, if any are the main general divisions between the two churches if any? Are there Northern Baptist churches?
There are many kinds of Baptists in the U.S. The Southern Baptists are the largest (indeed, they are the largest American Protestant denomination, and may have more people in their churches on a Sunday than even the Catholic Church, though I don’t think that’s been proven as yet) and thus the best known. The American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A. (not the same thing as the American Baptist Association) are the historic “Northern Baptist” counterpart to the Southern Baptists. They tend to be much more liberal, though they are all over the map and include many conservative evangelicals. There are many other Baptist conventions and independent churches, including several conventions made up nearly entirely of African-Americans (of course there are black members of the predominantly white groups as well). Many of the smaller (white) groups (and probably all the “independent Baptists”) are if anything *more *conservative than the Southern Baptists, though in recent years (as the SBC has become more aggressively and uniformly conservative) there are liberal split-offs as well. What, if any are the main general divisions between the two churches if any? You are right, Edwin. There is another recent split from the Southern Baptist Church: the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (thefellowship.info). There are quite a few of those around here, and William Jewell College (Liberty Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City,) afilliated with them when it was “bounced” out of the Missouri Baptist Convention of the Southern Baptist Convention over its support of homosexuality and the usual liberal “hot button issues.”. While the Cooperative Baptists claim to be authentically Baptist, they are quite liberal, accepting active, openly GLBT clergy, gay marriage, abortion, a low view of the nature and authority of Scripture and so forth. There are many kinds of Baptists in the U.S. The Southern Baptists are the largest (indeed, they are the largest American Protestant denomination, and may have more people in their churches on a Sunday than even the Catholic Church, though I don’t think that’s been proven as yet) and thus the best known. It’s pretty hard to generalize about Baptists.
