Hi Reg,
If I may make a slight correction … Orthodox Christians do not have a theory of supremacy of the Pope** because there never was supremacy** of the Pope of Rome. It was not something that has been rejected ‘since the schism’. The term ‘since’ is not quite correct here.
Enlighten me here a bit further please. (Just a wee bit!)
For Orthodox Christians, although Peter was the rock that Jesus built His Church on, is it believed that he did not hold any ‘office’ to pass on to a successor? (Only the office of bishop and priest were passed down through the centuries … ?)
Or am I misunderstanding things as my head gets sleepy late at night … ?

Pretty much. The Orthodox would contend that there’s no special petrine office, and that Peter had an unrepeatable role within the history of the Church.

Could it be said that the above sums up the situation … in a simplified way at least?
Any clarifications, or is that the basic difference?

There also needs to be acknowledgement of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church, the Coptic Orthodox Church, The Ethiopian Tehwado Orthodox Church, the Eritrean Orthodox Church, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Syrian Orthodox Church.

All of which schismed off at prior points to the schism between Byzantium and Rome, and significant portions of each came back into union in the last 3 centuries.

Through doctrinal development in His Mystical Body we sometimes get a gradual better understanding of the divine truth. The Eastern Orthodox tone down the importance of the Supreme Pontiff.

Click ‘class 1’ and then click ‘doctrinal development’ to understand what I mean. The website would also cover topics such as the Primacy of the Pope. The website is run by St. Michaels Media.
