Difference between "helping" and "helping someone cheat" in regards to schoolwork

Where’s the line between helping and “helping someone cheat”?

for example, a younger sibling has a project that family can help on. Is giving suggestions about what they should and shouldn’t do cheating? Or would you only be helping him cheat if you do all the thinking, ideas, and work for him?

Even at a post graduate university level it’s customary to obtain some help, for instance a supervisor reads the draft paper of a thesis, suggests corrections and points out weaknesses, even suggestion different directions the thesis might better take. It’s the person’s own name that goes on the thesis as the outcome is theirs.

To give suggestions and guidance isn’t cheating, and does help a child to find the best ways of approaching a subject, an assignment or a project.
It is no more than a reflection of life in the real world. We often need to test our ideas and learn from each other in anything we undertake.

I think of helping akin to brain storming, giving a train of thought and additional resource material. Doing the project for the child and letting the child claim the work as his or her own would be cheating.
