If God hadn’t revealed Himself we wouldn’t know of his existence at all.
I’m not so quite sure I agree with your statement. It really depends on the context you put this in. If God had never created us as spiritual beings (having the ability to know and choose) … then you are right that we would never know that God existed.

But having created us as spiritual beings with material bodies, Vatican II is very clear that we can know God exists by the “light of natural reason”. That just gets us to the door. In order to go through the door to know WHO God is, that requires Faith - trust in God’s revelation about Himself in Christ.

If you would like, I started a thread titled “Is Faith necessary to know that God exists?”

All this shows is that 10 or 11 QM interpretations are wrong, it doesn’t prove causality.

its not meant to, im pointing out that QM is hardly a settled matter.
I’m not trying to disprove it. I’m claiming that it’s not proven. In fact, observation and experimentation have sided with non-causality, but new observations could change that.

ive seen physicists claim that, they dont understand causality so they draw bad conclusions. all VP have a contingent relationship with a pre existing vacuum and vacuum energy, being contingent means they have a causal relationship, these scientists have mistaken an inability to percieve or predict the causal mechanism for there being no causal relationship.
Physicists understood causality perfectly well and argued over it vehemently since the 30’s. Einstein for one couldn’t stand the notion of a nature lacking causality. He claimed that the Copenhagen School was making an epistemological claim about nature, not an ontological one (what you are claiming). Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen in the EPR paradoxes paper made arguments that an inability to observe a causal mechanism does not mean it isn’t present. Bohr, Heisenberg, and others objected and claimed that they were not making an epistemological claim, but that the statistical wave functions were a complete description of natural phenomenon.

Later experiments built on top of the work of John Bell with entangled particles tend to corroborate the Copenhagen School. If there are hidden variables as EPR suggested, then they must somehow communicate faster than light speed. It’s certainly not impossible, but it is unnecessary to make the assumption of an unknown faster than light communication method unless we make the further assumption of causality.

The big question is: What other than assumption necessitates causality in nature? Why would it be impossible for nature to operate on probability? Why should we expect that nature must operate only as our highly limited experiences lead us to expect?
not according to david hume, he said that universal experience amounts to a law.
This is wrong. Please refer to Hume’s Treatise on Human Nature starting on p86. Hume argued that no amount of observation could prove the uniformity of nature, and that human nature more or less settles on uniformity for practicality’s sake.
by your logic gravity, conservation, etc, arent laws either.
Do you have proof that gravity existed, was not unified, and worked the same way in the early universe, particularly the Planck epoch?
funny, but the big bang looks like evidence to me.
You’ve made this bald assertion time and again. Please explain in detail how you get from cosmic inflation back in time to creation ex nihilo.
it is the emprical evidenc we have. what more proof do you need? in fact what more proof would any physicist need?
The events of early Big Bang are highly speculative. It is speculation on top of conjecture on top of hypothesis. Add to that the Big Bang theory does not address anything beyond this universe or anything that may or may not have existed prior.
i can rule out an eternal universe based on observation, that is after all the foundation of the sciences isnt it, empirical observation?
You keep using the universe as a synonym for nature. How can you rule out an eternal nature?
the only way around it is the idea of an eternal universe, not something that we observe. not something taken seriously by most physicists.
Once again you’re using universe as a synonym for nature. It’s simply not the case that no physicists take eternal nature seriously. In fact, all the major cosmological theories either predict an eternal nature or don’t deal with anything before the Planck epoch.
not to mention problems with SLOT, infinite time, etc.
Fine… Let’s examine why these are problems for an eternal nature.

Physicists understood causality perfectly well and argued over it vehemently since the 30’s.
if they understood the basics of causality they would know that a contingent relationship infers a causal relationship. not one would put forth the possibilty of VP as a creative mechanism, as its commonly bandied about.

again, all these theories are contingent on a pre existing vacuum and vacuum energy. the causal mechanism may not be known but the causal relationship can be inferred from the contingent relationship.
The big question is: What other than assumption necessitates causality in nature?
constant universal experience, the same as gravity, or any other physical law that we consistently experience.
Why would it be impossible for nature to operate on probability?
if it did, if causality were an illusion, i should not suspect this uniformity of existence we experience. things should happen randomly, from the causation of universes to the dissappearance of socks in the dryer… oh, wait.
Why should we expect that nature must operate only as our highly limited experiences lead us to expect?
we arent in a special place in the universe, we should be able to observe and experience the universal environment in part as a whole then.
This is wrong. Please refer to Hume’s Treatise on Human Nature starting on p86. Hume argued that no amount of observation could prove the uniformity of nature, and that human nature more or less settles on uniformity for practicality’s sake.
i assume i am wrong then, i read it the other day and now, have no idea where it went. my mistake.

if i find it i will attribute it properly.
Do you have proof that gravity existed, was not unified, and worked the same way in the early universe, particularly the Planck epoch?
no one has any evidence that anything physical existed prior to the planck epoch.
You’ve made this bald assertion time and again. Please explain in detail how you get from cosmic inflation back in time to creation ex nihilo.
it is the empirical evidence that our universe had a beginning, prior to the planck epoch we cannot assume that anything existed. unless you make that huge assumption, the BB looks like a beginning to me.
The events of early Big Bang are highly speculative. It is speculation on top of conjecture on top of hypothesis. Add to that the Big Bang theory does not address anything beyond this universe or anything that may or may not have existed prior.
yep, metaphysics past that.
You keep using the universe as a synonym for nature.
metaphysically the universe is a synonym for nature.

what do you think the difference is?
Once again you’re using universe as a synonym for nature. It’s simply not the case that no physicists take eternal nature seriously. In fact, all the major cosmological theories either predict an eternal nature or don’t deal with anything before the Planck epoch
.

which major theories are these? the ones that assume something prior to the planck epoch?

what makes that a valid assumptionm? why should we assume that anything existed prior to the planck epoch?

wait for it…causality. they think there must be a natural cause for the universe. there just must be!
Fine… Let’s examine why these are problems for an eternal nature.
dictionary.reference.com/browse/eternal
  1. Metaphysics. existing outside all relations of time; not subject to change.
i hope the metphysical definition of eternal alone will be sufficient

Did aileron ever define the “gap” you were supposedly filling? It seems like an unwarranted accusation. 🤷
This issue is being resolved in the “Dear Thomas…” thread.

Other than issues of wording and misunderstandings, the “gap” is closed. 😃

If all existences come from absolute nothingness, someone said then God came from nothing also, right?

Reply: Right, but all of God’s creations required the power of God to come into existence and remain in existence, whereas God came from nothing by His own power!

Absolute nothingness brought God into existence? non-sense
Nothing can only result in nothing.
Something can only come from something.
God does not come from something.
His very nature is ‘To Be’.
God cannot ‘not’ exist.
It is a contradiction in terms.
“I AM WHO AM” was never “I WAS NOT … BUT NOW I AM” … or “I AM BECOMING …”
There is nothing for God to BECOME. God SIMPLY IS.

If nothing comes from nothing…what of the claim that by His infinite power He created from absolute nothing?

Attempt to answer my own question:

God’s “meaning” and His existence are one…Identical.

1.We can talk about God but are not able to define Him. All our knowledge starts in sense-perception, thus it is natural for us to arrive at an understanding of immaterial things by way of things we sense.
  1. We can know God but are not capable of comprehending Him. Imagery (and symbols) reveal what God is not rather than what He is, and this fits the way we know God in this life.
It goes without saying (oops, I’m saying it) that our knowledge of God’s exisence is not self-evident.

"Absolute nothing brought God into existence…nonsense!’

The above giving “absolute nothing” a power is your statement, Sir or Ma’m NOT what I said!

why should there be a universe at all? why is there anything? i often hear the continual misinterpretation of quantum virtual particles as a possible explanation for the existence of the universe. people commonly misunderstand that this is more than a theory about the behavior of virtual particles in a vacuum.

people tend to think that a ‘vacuum’ is the same thing as ‘nothing’. its not! a vacuum, even a perfect vacuum, is a dimensionally defined space.

there is no physical reason why anything should exist at all. not even a vacuum. i wonder by what method an atheist may say we came into existence? if there be no physical reason for existence, we shouldn’t be here should we?
Which is funny because people expect a non paradoxical answer for a paradoxical scenario. Wouldent it make more sense if the answer to this scenario was also paradoxical? such as something within the universe causing the begining of said universe?

“Absolute nothingness brought God into existence? non-sense”

I believe you misunderstand Sir or Ma’am…absolute nothingness cannot “bring” anything!

a “takeoff” on this is the Trinity saying of Themselves…“We came from nothing!”

And it would be absolute truth, because there is absolutely nothing apart from God!

If nothing comes from nothing…what of the claim that by His infinite power He created from absolute nothing?
God does not create from ‘nothingness’. God creates from His own ‘Potentiality’ He has possession of in His Pure Actuality. On one hand you and I and all of creation did not exist and do not have to exist. Only God has to exist. All of created reality is contingent existence from God’s Non-Contingent Actuality.

One of the greatest fallacies or misunderstandings of scripture is that ‘God can do all things’ and that ‘with God all things are possible.’ St. Thomas Aquinas makes clear that only ‘that which is possible - is possible for God’. God is pure Actuality. In His pure Actuality - God possesses potentiality. Not the kind of potentiality that seems to suggest God is lacking in anything, but rather the ability to bring into existence that which is only potential or possible for Him. God creates from His Potentiality - not from NOTHING.

Jerry, what is it you are trying to suggest or what is your baseline premise? God came from nothing? Or am I misunderstanding you again?

We do know WHAT God is - ACTUS PURIS.
See newadvent.org/cathen/01125b.htm

We only know WHO God is by revelation - God telling us WHO He is - three distinct Persons possessing ONE and the SAME nature.

If nothing comes from nothing…what of the claim that by His infinite power He created from absolute nothing?
I do not agree with the Catechism of the Catholic Church with regard to its teaching on “ex nihilo” - that God created out of “nothing” - at least from a philosophical understanding. In God’s pure actuality is His potentiality. Whatever is possible is possible for God. That statement also suggests and states that there are things that ARE IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD. It is not possible for God to cease His own existence for example. What is possible for God is in the realm of His possession of potentiality. God lacks nothing, needs nothing, and there is nothing for God to be gained or ‘to become’. From a philosophical perspective, God created from His potentiality.

And what I am trying to simply say is - The Actuality and Potentiality of God is NOT NOTHINGNESS. The Actuality and thus inherently God’s possession of His Potentiality is something that HAS ALWAYS EXISTED, DOES EXIST and WILL ALWAYS EXIST.

While i agree with some of what you say, i think that i have to disagree that exnihilo need be interpreted as getting something from nothing. I think that this doctrine is true in the sense that God does not create out of pre-existing physical materials existing separately from God, in the sense that an artist uses paint in order to make his or her art.

Thank you !!! That is exactly what I have been trying to express. The reason I am even making noise about this distinction is because it is an important one when addressing those who mock the idea of God creating out of nothing. In one context that is true. But in a philosophical context, it is not true. God creates out of Himself and God is pure Spirit. Creation is God’s cup of Love overflowing (God’s cup that runneth over).

I embrace the truth that God did not ‘use’ any pre-existing material/physical reality to create the Universe. I know from an spiritual experience that only God HAS TO EXIST. Nothing else has to exist and in fact ONLY EXISTS because He wills it to exist. God is thinking of creation simply because it exists - otherwise it would not. Every moment of our existence is a sheer gift of GRACE (something we don’t deserve and should not even have unless it is given to us freely as as gift). God could have continued in BEING for all eternity without ever creating anything. God needs nothing and yet He wants and wills us to be.
