“The meaning of that quote refers to the impossibility of existence and life without God. It has nothing to do with, neither does it imply, death.”

The above clearly states “the impossibility of life” without God.

Yet the quote is:

Irrationality is life without God!

Sincerely,
Jerry Vilt
Is there something wrong with you?

Irrationality is life without God, means exactly the same thing as saying that it would be irrational to think that life can exist without God. That is the intention of the quote, and that much is clear.

Life, with out God, is irrational.

You consider irrationality, living?

I consider it a confused and without truth state!

“Irrationality is life without God, means exactly the same thing as saying that it would be irrational to think that life can exist without God. That is the intention of the quote, and that much is clear.”

It is ALSO SAYING that there is life without God!

“clear” - what, the intention?

“clear” - to who?..everyone?

The intention may be (hopefully) “exactly the same thing” but the two statements are not “exactly the same”!

No it is not saying that there is life without God. There is nothing about that quote that can be interpreted as saying that life is possible without God. Its saying that its irrational. Now, any body capable of thinking rationally and consistently will see that. If you don’t, it really isn’t my problem. This is the last time that I am responding to your nonsense.

Just as illogical as sitting on the branch of a tree and saying trees do not exist. Nothing cannot exist if God were not present. Whatever exists is because God is thinking of it and willing it being … moment by moment. God is giving me and all of creation its existence moment by moment. If God did not think of creation, it would not be. Yes, to say there is life without God is completely irrational.

This here is more in tune with logic. I agree with this version (so long as we remember that Gods act is identical with Gods being). The other arguments you made were false.

God cannot do the metaphysically impossible.
MoM:

I hate to tell you this, but, the statement I made is precisely from the compendium of Catholic teaching, The Teachings of the Catholic Church, without the words, “but God” inserted. The Catholic clergy that wrote the volumes I’m sure believed that adding something like that would confuse the concept. It would then appear that God took something from Himself to provide a “subject”, or, at least a “material”, which He could manipulate to form the stuff of the universe. If He did, then the Creation would not be as miraculous as it is, in my opinion.

The concept has historical power as well, as it has been a part of the Catholic belief system for ages.

God bless,
jd

That depends on how you interpret it. You are sure because that’s how you have chosen to interpret it. A miracle is not by definition performing the logically impossible. A miracle is an act of God.

The God you describe as being conditionally eternal, omnipresent, perfect, etc, is an heretical understanding of God. There is no support in catholic theology for the kind of God you speak of whatsoever.

MindOverMatter2, I believe you are hung up on the limitation of rationality.

I am not hung up on the limitations of rationality. I am upset that people have very little respect for logic and view God as some kind of wizard who can do absurd impossible things such as make a square triangle or make something come from absolutely nothing. Faith and hope is not an excuse for absurdity. Out of nothing comes nothing. That logical fact applies to God just as much as it applies to the universe.

I would rather say that i don’t know how God created the universe, rather than predicate absurdities to God embarrassing the faith in front of those who are accusing us of believing in an irrational God. That is not what Aquinas taught us to do! That is not what God taught us to do! I believe in a rational God for the same reasons i accept the theory of evolution. Truth cannot contradict truth. Your interpretation of ex-nihilo must be false; it has to be if logic is real.

“That logical fact applies to God just as much as it applies to the universe.”

God is limited by logic and facts (logical fact)???
  1. The universe is a creation!
  2. God is creator!
Treating them as equals???

(hopefully relavent):

We can talk about God but are not able to define (logic) Him.

I can’t believe this thread is still going. Its literally about “nothing”!😃
Precisely. The issue that’s raging now, as you can probably see, is about how we interpret ex-nihilo. You probably can see my position. I am unwilling to believe that logic can fail under any condition; it is not relative. I agree that we cannot understand everything in terms of logic, but i don’t believe that anything contradicts what we know to be true by logic. In fact i believe that metaphysical logic is a natural expression of Gods nature.

Good to see you and J Daniel posting again. Long time no see? Have you done that book yet?

Nope. That is not what i am doing at all. Its a fact that the universe exists and God exists. Does that mean that because they share the fact of existing, they therefore are equals? I see no reason to think that. Neither do i see any good reason to think that about them just because they both conform logic either.

Logic is a natural and necessary expression of Gods fundamental being and nature. It is not a limitation, but rather an expression of Gods eternal perfection.

Absolutely.

There is a real unicity between logic and God’s essence. Saying God can do irrational thing’s is violating the law of noncontradiction.

“an expression of Gods eternal perfection.”

expression?..from nothing comes nothing (in creation); from nothing God creates…is about God’s existence, not an expression!

No, book yet, I just dont have time anymore. I have been working, I put in almost 12 hours today. I worked at the stadium during the Kansas City, Manchester United game. We won 2-1. I thought United would tie us into knots, but our boys did well and pulled out a win. I start a new job tomorrow, I wont have time for much metaphysics, especially if I can go back to school.

The misapplication of what God can or cannot do starts with one’s understanding of the word POSSIBLE. God can only do what is POSSIBLE. For some that means there is absolutely nothing impossible for God even if that be totally absurd and contradictory. Suggesting that God has any limitations diminishes God’s Omnipotence for some who have yet to grasp the full meaning and implications of the word POSSIBLE. God can do anything? Yes, for those who do not understand the word POSSIBLE and its counterpart IMPOSSIBLE due to the limitation of REALITY.
