Coming back to Catholicism, one of the major things I can’t quite get my head around is Marian doctrine. However, I find great comfort in praying the Rosary. However I’ve decided to pray the Rosary everyday with the intention of understanding Our Lady’s place in the faith.

My problem is two fold:
  1. I’ve heard the Rosary prayed differently several times. Sometimes the O My Jesus prayer is in there and sometimes not. Also… the Rosary I purchased is different from the ones I’ve seen in various illustrations.
My Rosary has an extra bead between the first three Hail Mary’s and the announcement of the first mystery. I’d post pix, but apparently I’m too young on the forum to do that! LOL

Can someone tell me why that is and what that extra bead is for?

I really want to study the Rosary and become disciplined in praying it every day.

Is there an official way to pray the Rosary?

I’ve read what’s on here, but since I plan on doing this everyday, I want to make sure I’m doing it right before I memorize the prayers involved.

Any discussion would be helpful. And if you know any resources other than this site, I would sincerely appreciate it.

Thank you-- but I’ve already been to that site. My problem is that I have an extra bead right after bead five…

Hi again Kephart,

I am wondering if perhaps you don’t have some kind of Chaplet, instead?

There are many different kinds of Chaplets, and some of them do look like Rosaries. 🙂

Here is a link to the Catholic Company catalog page where they show both Chaplets and Rosaries together on the same page:

search.catholiccompany.com/search#w=Chaplets

You can see why it is easy to get confused, as they do look similar. With a Chaplet, you pray a particular prayer devotion.

Nope-- those seem to be missing a bead. I have an EXTRA BEAD.

Hi again…

The only other thing that I can think of then, would be to ask your pastor/parish priest for help. 🙂

I believe the O My Jesus Prayer was added, or at least made popular by Mother Angelica, on EWTN, when they pray the Rosary.

It’s not part of traditional rosaries as far as I know, so it’s optional.

However, I always say it.

Now THAT answers one of the questions! That’s where I’ve heard the Rosary prayed. Different people, but all on EWTN!

Thanks Jim!

I believe that the O my Jesus prayer was requested by Our Lady of Fatima.

I’ve been asked to add beads in that spot. Usually it’s for the first Our Father of the first decade or the last Glory Be of the last decade, for a special novena prayer or intention.

You make Rosaries? That’s cool! Have a website?

BTW-- that sounds reasonable-- is there an “official” way to say it? May I use that bead for a prayer of my choosing? Is that disrespectful?

I wouldn’t let the extra bead detract me, just ignore it if you can’t find a use for it. I am really happy you are praying the rosary and hope it becomes a regular part of your prayer life. There is special power there.

About the bead your talking about if I understand correctly from what you’ve described it’s the bead where you pray: Glory be.

It’s like:
The cross = Apostolic Creed
1st Bead = Our Father prayer
2nd, 3rd and 4th bead= Hail Marys
5th Bead (the one you’re mentioning I think)= Glory be

after this your Rosary starts.

Btw the Jesus prayer at the end of every decade is added by some, but not mandatory at all.
It’s actually a prayer that the kids at Fatima learned by The Blessed Virgin herself (According to the Fatima apparitions)

I hope I could help:)

You’re too sweet – no, no website. There are a lot of Beaders around here…I’m sure that several folks do.

The rosary is a private devotion, therefore, when it’s in your hands, you can pray just about any way your heart feels called. Some folks even make up their own prayers for private devotion (and run them through clergy for theological correctness, of course). There’s hardly a “wrong” way to pray the rosary.

I’ll look up a website for you that talks about the evolution of the prayers of the rosary. Originally, the “Holy Mary, Mother of God…” wasn’t said – just the first, scriptural part.

Edit:
From cptryon.org/prayer/rosary.html
The great prayer to Mary in the Catholic tradition is the Hail Mary. The first part of the prayer evolved in medieval times when Mary, the mother of rosary beadsJesus, appealed to Christians as the great witness to his life, death and resurrection. Its earliest form was the greeting of the angel Gabriel at Nazareth, according to St.Luke’s gospel:
Hail Mary,
full of grace,
the Lord is with you.
By those words of the angel God announced a divine favor. God would be with Mary. She would bring Jesus Christ into the world.
Over time the greeting given to Mary by her cousin Elizabeth, recorded in St. Luke, was added:
Blessed are you among women
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
Finally by the 15th century, the remainder of the prayer appeared:
Holy Mary, mother of God,
pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death.
and
By the end of the 16th century the practice of saying 150 Hail Marys in series or decades of 10 became popular among many ordinary Christian people. During these prayers the mysteries of the life, death and resurrection were remembered. That practice of praying is known now as the Rosary.

Right after bead number five, I have another bead right before the medallion.

If you’re right, then I wonder why there aren’t beads for the other Glory Be’s?

I wonder if maybe it’s just that someone made a mistake when making it? I have a Rosary that has only 9 beads in one of the decades… maybe you have that bead!!!

Anyway, I also recently found out that all the beginning prayers were added on too–very old Rosaries (often seen in paintings) were round with a Crucifix in among the beads.

The O My Jesus prayer is the Fatima prayer, which it is said that Our Lady herself asked the visionaries to add after each decade, but it is optional.
I make rosaries and I always make them with a bead after the 3 Faith, Hope, and Charity Hail Mary’s. I say a Glory Be on it.

So, the order in which I pray the rosary is thus:
The Apostles Creed
Our Father
3 Hail Mary’s (Faith , Hope and Charity)
Glory Be
Announce Mystery
Our Father
10 Hail Mary’s
Glory Be
Fatima prayer, repeat 4 more times,
then Hail Holy Queen
finally, Oh God, whose O=only begotten Son,… etc.

But I will tell you, You can go lots of places and hear varying versions with all of these prayers., Every time I go to a wake, I hear it done differently.
In other words, you can’t really go too far off base.
Just pray, and be at peace.
